I am sure that I am missing something here or in the book but.....If I am tuning my amp and/or antenna tuner how do I send a signal out besides using my voice on SSB or a key? (6300)

On the TX Panel...right under the power output and SWR meter is a button labeled "TUNE"   press it and it will toggle a tune signal on and off.  It is centered at zero-beat on SSB.

You can set the "tune power output" in the Settings>Radio Setup>Transmit tab...

Can I do it without the built in ATU doing it's job?

Click on the TUNE button in the TX panel on the right in SmartSDR.
You can adjust the TUNE power with the RF Power slide while transmitting or in advance at the Settings=>Radio Setup=>Transmit screen... Tune Power is at the bottom of that frame.

The ATU button activates the internal tuner and puts it in tune mode.  If you want to run without the internal tuner, hit the BYP (bypass) button .  Then if you hit TUNE it just sends out a tuning carrier.

Clicking on BYP bypasses the tuner.
