AetherSDR config microphone audio

I'm once again seeking help with audio configuration in AetherSDR. I want to use the AetherVoice option. Currently, the microphone is connected to an Apollo X4 2nd Gen audio interface, and the Apollo output is connected via cable to the BAL Flex 8600M input. This configuration doesn't allow the use of the blocks included with AetherVoice. The screenshots show that PC Audio is enabled in this case. I've tried adjusting the settings, but it still doesn't work. Is it necessary to use DAX and send the microphone signal wirelessly to the PC? The Uaudio console for Apollo is a dedicated mixer for Apollo and allows for signal routing. However, I haven't been able to achieve a positive result. Regards,

Mike,I watched this video. It shows all the AetherVoice blocks. However, I'm having trouble routing the microphone signal in the PC Audio option. I don't know how to do it. I've tried various options, but they didn't work. I've sent you an email.

Is this on Windows? Sorry, I am not a AetherSDR power user and I had just watched that video. Someone else might have some expertise.

    Mike,
This works in Windows. Aethre has an audio configuration. In Win10, I have the Mic Universal Audio Thunderbolt WDM as the default device. Flex doesn't accept ASIO. The problem is how to route the microphone signal to Windows in the Apollo console. Has anyone tried this before?

I just looked up the specs for your audio interface. I own a much simpler Universal Audio Volt 1 interface that connects to my computer. My microphone audio is fed into the Volt 1 and through the USB connection to Windows. I think from what I have read so far about your interface that feeding the audio into the Balanced input on the back of the radio you should select BAL for the microphone selection in AetherSDR instead of PC. ( plus, the right profile for the microphone you are using).

After that, follow the setup directions in the video. To use the AetherSDR audio chain.

Actually, I think it might be better since the interface you have is quite sophisticated, that you may want to bypass the AetherSDR audio tools until you have it working using the default controls that are the same as those in SmartSDR.

    Hi James,
Thank you very much for your reply. I'm wondering if AetherVoice can work with just a microphone connected via cable to the Flex 8600's BAL port. When I go to the Audio tab in the Aether radio setup, I only have Mic (Universal Audio Thunderbolt WDM) and several DAX options. If I select BAL in the Phone/CW tab, the signal from my microphone controls the Aether correctly. After turning on AetherVoice, there's no signal. After changing the Phone/CW tab on the PC, the MIC button lights green and the plugins show a signal. The modulation is distorted. If I disconnect the BAL cable from the Flex8600, there's no microphone signal. I think the only problem is properly routing the signal from Apollo to the PC. You probably need software like Voice Meter Banana or similar. Are you using DAX or Banana to transmit the microphone signal wirelessly? I'd like to use AetherVoice because it has so many features, but so far my attempts to connect via Apollo have been unsuccessful. Perhaps the author of the Aether software only allows use with USB audio interfaces? I'm hoping this problem is solvable. I just don't know how to connect it properly.

You must have your microphone connected to your PC—not the Flex BAL jack—to utilize AetherSDR voice processing. You might consider joining the AetherSDR Users facebook group for much discussion of the software. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2858330034501224

Rick, I'll join the Facebook group. My microphone is plugged into the Apollo X4 Universal Audio. It's an advanced audio interface. The Apollo output cable is now disconnected from the Flex 8600M. I'm setting up mic audio routing using VB Potato on my computer. AetherVoice will recognize the input and output ports in Win10. I need to talk to someone who has a similar setup using a USB audio card and Voice Meter Banana. I'm not sure if DAX needs to be enabled as well? Maybe someone here has this setup and I can figure out how to do it.

DAX isn't needed for microphone audio. That isn't it's intended purpose.

I replied to your email. I don't use VM Potato with my UA Volt 1 USB audio interface. It adds too many layers to the audio chain. That is also why I only use the basic TX EQ features in SmartSDR and AetherSDR. I get good audio reports from people that know my voice. So, I try to keep it simple. If I were into eSSB I might do differently.

The new AetherSDR 26.6.1.1 version allowed me to launch Channel **** and work in AetherVoice mode. However, I'm having some minor issues. I have to use the mouse to activate the MOX button, because if I activate it with the PTT footswitch, there's no modulation. The SSB signal becomes distorted and hoarse after a few seconds. Any suggestions?

I am successfully using AetherVoice. PTT could be problematic because PC MIC is not activated via a footswitch so far as I can see. PTT does work with various hardware. I have FlexControl and Stream Deck that uses the API via FRStack and these activate MOX. If you don't have this hardware, someone may state here an alternative like Node Red or other.

    Slawomir,

I also had issue's getting my USB audio interface to work with Aether PCAudio. What I found was I did not have enough GAIN to drive the software. I used a Dynamic mic into the Behringer UMC202HD plugged into a USB-A port on my Win 11 computer. It did not work at all. A friend mentioned the mic issue might be not enough gain from the Behringer. I hooked up an old mic preamp, from the preamp output I used a XLR to 3.5mm cable going into a USB Audio dongle. The dongle had 2 inputs both 3.5mm, a MIC and a Headphone input. I verified in Windows sound device manager the mic was setup and working. I then verified in Aether Audio drop down menu the USB mic was selected. With the mic preamp driving the Aether software I got more than enough gain to make all the adjustments, it worked very well. It did not work with my Behringer USB audio interface.

I did not want to use the external mic preamp as is bulky and takes up too much room on the desk. Another Flex/Aether user suggested a XLR to USB-C mic cable. I ordered one off of Amazon and WOW plenty of mic gain and just a mic and cable into the Win 11 computer. It works fantastic BUT the VOX has

1 to 1.5 second latency so it is unusable for me. I noticed someone submitted a bug report for this latency issue and as of June 4th there is no fix. A solution might be to use a USB PTT switch, I haven't built one or purchased one yet so cannot verify. I believe W2ENY has a USB footswitch on his web site. Currently I'm back to using the dynamic mic plugged in the 3.5mm jack on my 8400, works fine for me.

On Amazon just search; xlr to usb-c cable

    Hi Dave,

Today I installed Aether 2.6.1.1. Now I have the microphone signal from my Apollo in AetherVoice. I can test with plugins. However, after a few seconds, the SSB signal becomes distorted and crackling. Without AetherVoice, everything is fine. The second problem is that if I activate the PTT with the footswitch, there is no modulation. If I press the MOX button in Aether, then everything is fine. I think it's a software error or incorrect configuration. Regards,

    Hi Eric,
Thanks for the info. Please let me know if you're working with Aether Voice on Windows or MacOS? What kind of microphone do you have and how is it connected? Do you have an audio card and are you routing the microphone signal to your PC? Are you using DAX? As I mentioned, I managed to get Aether Voice working, but after a few seconds, the modulation becomes distorted and raspy. I don't know if it's a software issue or another problem.

I spent a lot of time with Aether Voice and Wondows 11. Unfortunately i could not make it useful due to a high delay. Initially I thought it is about 0.5 sec delay, but I later I estimated it at least 1sec for Microphone.

I opened a bug report on github, but this is not actually Aether bug, but mostly Windows drivers.

I purchased Audio USB interface Scarlet Solo as I was exited to try it out. Had to return it as it was not practical to keep at this point.

I am interested if anyone found a solution for Windows as my understanding from Jeremy this is not an issue on Linux. I saw some discussion of possibility to use ASIO audio drive and downloaded it, but could not find a way to use it with Aether.

Unless AetherSDR has a way to access the ASIO driver in Windows, Windows will use WDM drivers instead of the ASIO driver to talk to a external audio interface. That way it will play all system sounds through the external interface. Thetis for the Anan radios has a custom ASIO driver called cmASIO that allows access to external devices and their ASIO drivers. I use it with Thetis and my Anan radios and latency is almost undetectable. I am not sure if cmASIO is open source or not. It was developed by a 3rd party developer for Thetis. I feel like it could be incorporated into AetherSDR.

Geoff, I downloaded ASIO from that site, but could not find a way to use it with AetherSDR. Hopefully one day it can be added to Aether.

ASIO is on the AetherSDR road map but allocated low priority.

I installed VoiceMeter Potato and routed the signal to my PC. The DSP works, but the signal becomes distorted after a few seconds of speech. I can't find the cause of this distortion.
