Flex 6400 transmit squeal

My Flex 6400 transmits a squeal instead of audio when I go into transmit. Using an FHM-2 mic. Worked fine and then just started the squeal. Any ideas?

Hi Roger, do you have MON turned on? If so, either turn it off or use headphones with the speakers muted.

  • The squeal is on the transmitted signal, what goes out the antenna....

Can you post a screenshot of SmartSDR?

  • When I press the mic button and speak, I just get a squeal (in another receiver, and from an on air report). Last time my voice was squeaky was 60 years ago!

Hi Roger, I don't see anything amiss. When you transmit, where is the peak level indicator?

On voice peaks, it should not exceed 0 dB and therefore never turn red. Somewhere around -5 dB (as shown above) is about right. Note that it is the peak indicator rectangle, not the average bar that you should be watching.

If this is not the problem, then you might be getting RF into your audio somehow. A test at low power should help identify it that is a problem or not.

And, finally, to cover the obvious - do you have another receiver on in the same location on the same frequency?

It would be better if you can post a video of what is happening. There are numerous settings that might make this happen

If there is a squeal on your transmitted signal, then share a video while talking into a dummy load.

It could be a bad mic, RFI, and a few other things. Right now, we don't have enough to go on.

  • Len, KD0RC: A couple short videos on their way to you via your ARRL e-Mail....can't post videos here, apparently.

    Thanks.

You should be able to attach a video as others do. If not, just upload it to YouTube and provide the link here.
