MARS
MARS software, on a traditional radio, such as an IC-7300 communicates sound via a Windows Comm port, (lets say Com3) and a separate port (lets say Com4) for CAT control.
Some may have this slightly different. But its not all that complicated.
I've heard that getting MARS software to work on Flex Radios is a real struggle. Is the Flex Radio support team ready to support this sort of configuration? I know that on Flex Radios, its all done via ethernet. But thats about all I know.
If/when I call tech support will I get a blank look? Or does the support team have this down at this point?
The other, related question is, does a Flex Radio support ION2G ALE? I scan on my IC-7300 for hours on end. Days really.
Any thoughts?

First you'll need 2 things—an extended frequency module (which your purchase from Flex and install yourself) and a TURF file that allows your radio to operate outside regular ham bands. (You don't just remove a diode to "open up" a Flex) The TURF file is tied to your S/N and free from Flex with proof of MARS membership.
Getting the MARS software to work with the Flex is not a big deal. A part of the Flex software lets you create all the virtual COM ports you want, so you just create 2 ports, one for CAT and one for the audio and it automatically works. It isn't much different than setting up any other digital amateur software.
As I said in another post, anytime I've had a problem getting it to work it's been a problem with the software itself, and since it's proprietary Flex support can't help you with that.
Your Flex will NOT work with ALE. It definitely does not like scanning across various bands the way your ICOM will.
If you need advice about setting it up for MARS use just ask around in MARS forums. There are plenty of Flex's in use.

Wayne,
You’ll need the Extended Frequency Module, and you should include your ATO with the order. ION2G does work with FlexRadio. The main challenge will be transitioning your operating knowledge from the IC-7300 to FlexRadio, but that’s very manageable.
I use FlexRadio exclusively for all MARS operations, and several members in our region are also using Flex systems. From a technical standpoint, the software and operating procedures remain the same. As mentioned earlier, the biggest adjustment is the learning curve, but with the number of online videos and resources available, you’ll get comfortable with it quickly.
If you choose the 8600 series, you’ll only need the Extended Frequency Module. If you go with the 8400, you’ll need the Extended Frequency Module, and you’ll also need the Internal Automatic Tuner, which I strongly recommend. I’ve used the 8400, 8600, and 6000 series for all MARS, SHARES, and USCG AUX activities, including voice and digital.
Feel free to send me a direct message if you’d like more details on the MARS software setup. I’d be happy to share my profiles and screenshots.
Thanks
