WSJT-X - TX Audio Distortion

Member
Hello

I’ve come across a strange issue and wanted to see if anyone has run into something similar or has any ideas.

I’m running WSJT-X on three different computers, but two of them are consistently experiencing an odd problem that I haven’t been able to resolve.

Problematic Systems:

ASUS NUC and HP Z2 Mini, both running Windows 11

Intel i7 15th Gen and 14th Gen, 32GB RAM, high-performance SSDs

Radios tested: FlexRadio 8600 and 8600M

The Issue:

When I transmit using FT8 or FT4, I notice:

Distortion and signal jumps during TX

Beeping or noise artifacts heard in the transmit audio

Visible distortion in the waterfall display on both FlexRadio

The exact same radio setup, using the same WSJT-X configuration, works flawlessly on another HP Desktop, which points to the issue being specific to these two machines.

Additional Notes:

I’ve ruled out RFI — I even moved the system to another location miles away, and the issue still occurred.

I’ve double-checked drivers, audio settings, and tried different bands and settings, but no change.

I’m at a bit of a loss — has anyone seen this kind of behavior before or have suggestions on what to try next?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Just my opinion, based on experience, but I would suspect the distortion being due to the NUC and Mini having to work hard at background tasks (because of their relatively low spec) whilst also being required to render seamless audio.

A popular answer to this is to check for DPCs and latency, to which end Flex have two useful articles:

What are DPCs and Why Do They Matter? – FlexRadio

Using LatencyMon to collect DPC Latency Data – FlexRadio

My own resolution is to identify and stop all unnecessary background tasks, Windows Services, uninstall Windows Apps that are not required and / or which constantly handshake with Microsoft. In short, pare down the OS and get the number of running tasks at boot up as low as possible.

Windows 11 natively can have 100+ tasks running (as seen in Task Manager / Performance tab) whereas on my W11 system it boots with 76). With my ASUS NUC, it now does not exhibit distortion in FT8 TX.

Thanks, Erik. I ran the DPC test and the results are below 1000 — the system isn’t running much in the background. I’m attaching the report below. This is all pretty new to me, so if you see anything concerning or have suggestions on what to tweak to improve things, I’d really appreciate it!

Hard pagefaults are events that get triggered by making use of virtual memory that is not resident in RAM but backed by a memory mapped file on disk. The process of resolving the hard pagefault requires reading in the memory from disk while the process is interrupted and blocked from execution.

NOTE: some processes were hit by hard pagefaults. If these were programs producing audio, they are likely to interrupt the audio stream resulting in dropouts, clicks and pops. Check the Processes tab to see which programs were hit.

Wdf01000.sys is a well known culprit that can cause audio issues. Which is not to say it is the (sole) reason here. More likely it is an over bloated OS. However, you can tackle it to see if afterwards in a rerun of the DPC test that it disappears.

    1. In Device Manager / System Devices, set High precision event timer to disabled
    2. In Device Manager / Network adapters, select the one you use and deploy the changes in its Properties that are outlined in Tim Ellison's article "Optimizing Ethernet Adapter Settings for Maximum Performance" at https://helpdesk.flexradio.com/hc/en-us/articles/202118518-Optimizing-Ethernet-Adapter-Settings-for-Maximum-Performance
    3. Check the Windows 11 Power Plan is set for Maximum Performance
    4. In Windows Settings / Gaming / Game Mode, set this to on (which also helps stop background activity in addition to the paring advice I gave)
    5. Update all drivers in the OS
    6. Open a Help Desk ticket if all else fails since the issue involves DAX. Much more knowledgeable people than myself, such as Tim and Mike, may provide a solution.

Thanks Erik, I will open a case now since I did all of that and still have the issue. Here is the new results.
Also I just open a Helpdesk ticket.

    CONCLUSION
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Your system seems to be having difficulty handling real-time audio and other tasks. You may experience drop outs, clicks or pops due to buffer underruns. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates.
LatencyMon has been analyzing your system for 0:11:03 (h:mm:ss) on all processors.

DPC routines are part of the interrupt servicing dispatch mechanism and disable the possibility for a process to utilize the CPU while it is interrupted until the DPC has finished execution.

    REPORTED HARD PAGEFAULTS
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Process with highest pagefault count: smartsdr.exe

Total number of hard pagefaults 3329
Hard pagefault count of hardest hit process: 1087
    Number of processes hit: 43

I am having the same problem and the computers are fast. It was not seen months ago but is now a problem I can’t find or solve. One computer AMD AM5 9 7900x and the other is a Dell 7 7700. The Dell is fine and not ever seen the issue. The AMD was good for a long time but now a problem for last few months. Both computers have same latest versions of software for all apps. I have the problem with only WSJT-x and SmartSDR running. Only on 1 band, one decoder. The problem also there with JTDX.

I have run LatencyMon and is good. Never erroring out and less than 100us. All bars on the left side LatencyMon pane.

In FT8 there are POPs in TX as seen on the monitor audio and waterfall. The pops in the waterfall display are wide in the tx audio bandwidth. It may pop 5 or 10 times in a transmit cycle. Not seen in audio decode. The station is having some problems decoding me and usually complete Q in a few try’s.

In SmartSDR Test button there a no pops. In test using WSJT-X there are pops. Even at 5 watts or less and no amp.

As a test I reduced th TX band with to 1200 low and 1800 high with tx at 1500 hz and as expected the waterfall pops got narrower around the TX 1500 hz.

I have setup DAX my second good computer using DAX from to the bad computer. DAX running on both computers with configured to the bad computer. The TX audio is clean.

It seems to me that there is a problem in the computer TX audio path on the computer or the DAX on that computer that is allowing conflicts in the audio signal. It is running the latest update to Windows 11. I don’t recall exactly but it’s like 2H24.

If anyone has resolved this issue or has test suggestions it would be helpful.

I will fill out a help desk ticket next week when I can be home.

Are you using a switch/router or is there a direct Ethernet connection to the radio?

  • Member
Hi Bill, Yes same problem here and I can't pin point to what is the problem.

@"John KB4DU" I use a Switch, before I have a switch connect to another to expand ports but the Z2 Mini and the Flex are on the same switch now and still have the problem. I'm running next a Wireshark to make sure no communication issue between radio and computer.

Hello, just to update everyone. After a full day of troubleshooting, I was finally able to track down the issue—it turned out to be network-related.

Using the DPC article from the Flex Community and LatencyMon, I discovered that a faulty network cable was causing my computer’s network card to generate CRC errors. Once I replaced the cable, everything started working perfectly.

    Appreciate the resources and support!
