Spectrum Overview question

edited February 21 in FLEX-8000 Signature Series

Using the new Spectrum Overview feature is it possible to monitor more than 4 slices on the 8600? Can someone post a photo of this feature in action?

TIA

I believe that feature hasn't been implemented yet.

Thanks James. It seems that's the consensus of others as well. I've heard FRS mention that with the additional computer horsepower in the 8600 it may have the potential to view more than 4 band segments. As a current 6700 owner I'm anxious to know whether that's actually true. And more importantly, does FRS plan such software changes in the foreseeable future.

could you please provide details (when, where, who) of Flex saying this?

Yes, Steve Hicks has mentioned that they are looking into the possibility of more than 4 slices for the 8600 (no promises). He also said that it was not a priority, given the other things that are in the pipeline.

Sorry, but I don't remember the post(s) where he mentioned this.

This is my understanding from Steve's comments made at Orlando Hamcation presentation:

Spectrum Overview - Visibility of all HF/6m bands in a single, unified panadapter window to provide awareness of bands to spot openings easier, DX stations moving between bands. All this with greatly reduced noise floor than it is today. You'll be able to setup multiple bands next to each other so if you want to watch 10, 15 and 20m you can keep an eye on them in a single panadapter window, as compared to now where you would need to have 3 receivers open to do that.

To be clear one panadapter window, one slice, leaving the other 3 slices on the 8600 available.

Steve's comments about the possibility of having 8 spectrum displays at the same time was in a thread on the Flex Radio groups.io mailing list. This is different from Spectrum View.

I specifically spoke to Steve (CTO) at he Orlando Hamfest while he was at the FlexRadio Booth. He too confirmed that they are looking into "Expanding" the amount of slices that could be done on the "8600". He specially stated that there is a possibility but was clear that "8" was NOT possible. The number at 6 was mention but NO commitment was made other than they have been researching Hardware/Technical and Software Issues.

So there is hope but no immediate commitment which is understandable considering both new Platform and Software Platforms.

Yes, this is in the forecast. Engineering resources have not yet been assigned to it.

BTW: "Spectrum Overview" is an anticipated PANADAPTER-LEVEL feature, for the display panadapter, and not a SLICE feature (involving the number of slices, bands, frequencies, etc.)

Some users may not understand that it is possible, even now, to open a PANADAPTER without opening a SLICE in that panadapter.

    You can do that now, and view a panadapter of up to 7 MHz wide on a 8400 / 6400 / 6300 radio, and up to 14 MHz wide on a 8600 / 6600 /6500 / 6700 radio.
