With the 8600, you have a tune button, so you don't need to use RTTY, AM, CW or FM to get a carrier. You set the tune power independently from the RF power.

Actually with an 8600 and TG XL, you just press the TUNE button on the TG XL and it will have the radio generate a carrier and place the TG XL in tune mode. When complete, the radio will unkey.
as Len stated, you can set TUNE power level in SmartSDR TX Band Settings.0 -
The auto tune does not fine tune the signal enough to suit me. My LP-700 Digital station Monitor shows more SWR than I want. When I tune manually using my 7300 and the Palstar AT4K and RTTY I can tune my radio to the antenna down to 1.00. My question is not how to use auto tune but how do I send the RTTY signal using the 86000

That is fine if I trust auto tune to do the best job, I don't. My Lp-700 Digital station monitor shows that after auto tune I can better tune the solution manually but I have to use the microphone and talk. The RTTY on my 7300 sends a constant signal, no interruptions of speech. I want the same constant signal on my 8600

One option, You can set the Autotune Minimum SWR settings from the TGXL APP in the "Other" TAB then "Band Configurator" option, You can also set the Bypass frequencies that will put the Tuner in bypass mode automagicly if you have the Antenna Genius.

also, consider reflected power difference of 1.3:1 vs 1.01:1 SWR. The difference in actual power out is so minimal the receiving station would not notice.
You can adjust the minimum SWR as Bret pointed out. You can also press TUNE on Flex to generate a carrier to fine tune the TG XL if you desire. There is no need to use RTTY, even if you use the PalStar in place of the TG XL. The procedure to manual tune the TG XL is in the user manual.
RTTY is used on traditional radios that do not have ability to generate a steady carrier like the Flex.73 Dave wo2x

As an old **** like my friend Dave, can we suggest that you don't need to worry about the SWR values. Regardless of the fact that it is 1.0, 1.1 or 1.7 it won't make any difference in your ability to make contacts or any possible damage to the radio.
When tuning an antenna, the VFO Carrier frequency is good enough. When operating RTTY you transmitted signal will be about 2000 hz higher. When operating SSB, you will be transmitting on a range from the VFO frequency all the way up (or down) to over 3000hz higher.
Fortunately, all the antennas we use today (and tuners) can handle that range in bandwidth without tuning.
Personally, I have operated HF for almost 50 years and I only get worried if the SWR is pushing 2:1 and I have done that running up to 2000 watts.
As they say, it ain't broke. Don't fix it. :)
