FLEX-6600: Fan Question (replace existing fan with one from Noctua)

Hi folks,

I ordered a FLEX-6600 in Nov. 2020 that's currently doing fine work in my friend's shack (I don't have room for antennas at my condo). One of my engineer friends feels very strongly that I should replace the current (working) fan with one from Noctua.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I am fortunate to have engineers (with PCB rework experience and a full stack of test and measurement equipment) to work with on this.

Why? My 6600 has worked daily for 6.5 years without issue.

    Hi Pete

The fan question is a good one.

Allow me to provide some insights that might help you make an informed decision.

The FLEX-6600 has undergone rigorous engineering to ensure reliable performance. Factors like fan flow, RPM monitoring, and efficiency are critical for its operation. Replacing the existing fan should consider these design aspects to maintain optimal cooling and prevent potential shutdowns.

The power controller in the radio monitors fan rpm and cooling as part of its job.

I hope that helps explain it.

Imbought two extra fans (exact part number) for my 6600. Never needed to use them. I have sold the 6600 and using a 6700 so the two fans are excess to my needs.

If anyone would want to acquire an exact drop in replacement, contact me at my email on QRZ. $25 each shipped.

But as other have stated, failures are extremely rare.

Are they good for the 6400?

    the 6400

And 6600 use the same fans. These are 3 wire fans that report RPM to the radio.
