persistence?
When does persistence change a saved profile? If I load a profile and then change it someway, maybe power or AGC-T, when does that change get saved into the loaded profile? What do I do if I do not want that change saved into my profile?
Do all three types of profiles get changed the same way? Does it make a difference if I am using SSDR or my 6400M face?
I want to understand this because I use lots of profiles. The manual hints at what goes on but does not give much detail.

The profile settings are saved as they are changed. Seems like it was changed 3-4 years ago. Previously profiles required a deliberate click to save. Flex made the change because they believed it would reduce support request. It should be selectable to turn auto save on or off.

I am just working on a presentation about this.
Hopefully, this overview helps a bit and by writing this all out is helping me to structure my presentation --- which I will share in a few weeks.
Persistence is used to remember how you left a band (simple wording). All of these items are saved.
The next part is MIC and Transmit profiles.
When you make a change to a setting that is covered by MIC profiles or Transmit profiles, that value is automatically saved. This might help to answer your question.
Trying thinking of the key triggers:
- Active TX Antenna
- Active TX Group Mode
TX Profile settings.
Generally, you use 1 or 2 TX profiles. Maybe 1 for Barefoot settings and another for when you are using the Amp. I have one for Transverter use.
Transmit Profiles are linked to the TX Antenna setting in the Transmit Slice.
A single Transmit Profile will cover all bands for that Transmit Antenna.
(See section 18.2 in the V3 SmartSDR manual)
Mic profiles
see Section 18.1 of the v3 SmartSDR manual for more info
I would build a Mic Profile for each Mic you wish to use. You also need to build a Mic profile for each Mode Group.
The Mode Groups are:
- SSB (LSB USB)
- Digital (DIGU DIGL)
- FM (FM, NFM, DFM)
- AM (AM, SAM)
- RTTY
- any other waveforms
Mic Profiles are associated with the mode of the Slice Receiver.
The MIC Profile in use at any time is determined by the mode of the Transmit slice.
How do Global Profiles work?
see section 18.3 while you have the manual open
Recalling a Global (manually saved) profile, recalls the TX Antenna and the last active transmit profile associated with that Transmit antenna.
Next, when you recall a Global profile, it sets the TX slice to a mode and then that pulls in the last associated MIC profile.
Could we have done this differently?
Yes, of course. The first thought is autosave vs. non-autosaved.
Next, we should know if the PGXL is in STBY or OPERATE and then invoke the correct Transmit Profile.

Hi Mike. Thanks for your very informative explanation of persistence. I understand most of what you are saying and I have done many profiles, exported and imported them.
So I guess as soon as I change anything on the screen that changes the current profile. But does that affect the exported/saved profile? If I load a xmit profile that has been exported/saved with 100 watts drive power, and I then change the power to 4 watts to make the qso as QRP, is the exported/saved profile changed so the next time I import profiles then that xmit profile will show 4 watts output?
I can understand keeping the changed setting as long as that profile is active. But if I import profiles then I would not want that change to show up in the imported profile.
I'm not asking you to change your process nor am I criticizing how things are done, I'm just trying to understand it so I know how to use it.

If you change something on the radio, it does NOT affect an exported profile. The Exported profiles are a backup that you can reload if required.
Correct. If you import a profile, it goes back to the point in time that you saved it.
Good questions. Thanks for asking.
