6400 displaying OVERHEAT message while in RX

I have a Flex 6400 that is showing the OVERHEAT message and says that I need to reboot the radio.

  • This is in RX only - Radio was turned ON and after ~5 minutes in RX, it showed the message. NO TX had been done!
  • Removed the cover and found no accumulation of dust, etc. Used a blower to get out what wasn't seen.
  • Fan is working (at least it seems like it. No weird noises and it's moving at the right speed)
  • This is occuring more and more often. The ambient temp is around +25C to +28C while in RX. Never had this problem for several years and now we are seeing this.

For now, we can get out of this problem by rebooting the radio.

Any suggestions?

This is the error message ... this occured in RX mode, no TX. Ambient temp in the garage is +28C.

I will ... once my ham host is back home in case we need to check inside. For now, I am using my remote TS-480SAT and a SignaLink interface for data. It's at the same site.

By the way, I used the Flex today and after ~5 minutes in RX, I got the alarm. Before he left for his trip, my ham host opened the Flex, made sure that there was no dust or debris, and confirmed that the fan worked. The Expert amp shows an ambient of 33C. Too bad that there is no temp sensor inside the Flex.

Note that there is someone else in the house (my emergency shutdown :-), his son is not a ham so I can only rely on him for a shutdown. Note that my system has automated redundancies and will shut down by itself ... but the human override is always good to have.

hi Bruno...I agree with Len, this is time for a support ticket. I suspect this is the FPGA fan(s), not the cabinet fans. My 6500 came up with the same message, and it required a trip back to the 'spa' for replacements.

You can get that message if there is a Fan issue.

This can be causes by a slow moving fan, as we monitor the Fan RPM.

If the fan looks normal then open a support ticket.

Thanks ... when my host ham is back from his trip, I'll open a ticket. For the time being, I am using my remote TS-480SAT running through a pair of RemoteRig interfaces. It's connected to port 2 the same amplifier and has access to the same antennas (you can see this on my QRZ page)

I'll keep this group informed of the results as it might help others :-)

    Hi Bruno,

There is a small app you can install to monitor/display the temp in the radio on SSDR. The app is:

    SDRMonitor

I have some pictures of it and more info on my web page. Here is the link, scroll down to the SDRMonitor app info.
