BACKGROUND:

A recently discovered Windows operating system (OS) function is responsible for consuming excessive amounts of disk space on the displays of M-model radios and Maestros. In some cases, it prevents the installation of SmartSDR software versions or results in the persistent display of the EULA message when booting a radio. SmartSDR v3.5.8 and v2.10.0 add file system management logic for M models and Maestro to mitigate excessive disk consumption. (This software issues has been designated SMART-9583)

This procedure should work for most of these cases.

M-Model Front Panel Recovery Procedure:

(Note: Your radio must be connected to the internet in order to download the required file)

1) Go to your "Select a Version" screen on the Radio Front Panel and select the little "Gear" icon in the lower-left corner of the screen. This opens a "Settings" Menu.

Disable the option for: "On Startup, Auto-Connect Last Radio." The button should be DARK.

Tap on "<Radio" to return to the "Select a Version" screen.

2) Select v2.2.2 and Select "Update." (This is a special "fix" version that will delete extraneous files from the Front Panels memories to make room for the new update.)

3) Wait at least 60 seconds. (The Front Panel will proceed for a moment as though it was installing new software, and will go through Step 1, Step 2, and then will freeze on either Step 3 or Step 4. The update will freeze at step 3 or 4. -- This is expected behavior.)

4) After you have waited 60 seconds, simply reboot your radio. (Regardless of what the Front Panel says)

5) Now, select the latest version of software that you wish to use:

(In most cases, this will be either v3.5.8 or v2.10.0, which are the two latest versions of software.)

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Downgrading the radio or Maestro to a version before SmartSDR v3.5.8 or v2.10.0 will result in Windows once again consuming all of the available disk space in the display on M-Model radios and Maestros.

This procedure can also be used on Maestros that have the same conditions.

Maestro Recovery Procedure:

(Note: Your Maestro must be connected to the internet in order to download the required file, and must be able to connect to a radio on the network)

1) Select your radio and tap "CONNECT" to get to the Maestro's "Select a Version" screen.

Select the little "Gear" icon in the lower-left corner of the screen.

(The Maestro will proceed for a moment as though it was installing new software, and will go through Step 1, Step 2, and then will freeze on either Step 3 or Step 4. It may start showing a "Waiting on Hardware Initialization" warning pop-up.)

4) After you have waited 60 seconds, Do a hard reboot of the Maestro:

Press and HOLD the Maestro Power button for 20-30 Seconds until the Screen, buttons and all lights turn completely off. Wait about 15 seconds and then turn the Maestro back on by pressing the power button for about 6-8 seconds.

5) Now, select the latest version of software that you wish to use and connect to your radio:

(In most cases, this will be either v3.5.8 or v2.10.0, which are the two latest versions of software.)

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Downgrading the radio or Maestro to a version before SmartSDR v3.5.8 or v2.10.0 will result in Windows once again consuming all of the available disk space in the display on M-Model radios and Maestros.
