"page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" error after installing SmartSDR
Andy M5ZAP

Hi,
Setting up a new PC running windows 10 Pro and I have a "Blue screen" Stopcode causing the PC to reboot.
The code is "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"
The software build sequence was
1 - Update windows
2 - Update Dell drivers (I7 Precision 3430)
3 - Install SmartSDR for Windows V3.0.27
The PC was fine until step 3, doing a system restore to remove SmartSDR corrected the fault.
I carried out Full hardware tests on the memory and hard disk etc to check it wasn't a hardware issue.
Any help would be appreciated.

I will try the community for a solution before opening a help desk ticket, as that is what it is there for and also good at..
As additional information the error is in PORTCLS.SYS which from a bit of googling appears to be related to the DAX drivers.
I have also checked for corrupt system files

Andy, I would download the SSDR file again and install the new copy.0

Hi Bob
Thanks for reply.
I have completely reinstalled a fresh version of windows and then reinstalled the SmartSDR and the problem persists.
I have found other people have had the same issue when using "virtual Audio Cable" software (Which I do not have installed) but it points towards the DAX software using PORTCLS.sys as they are similar bits of software.
The Blue Screen of Death occurs when the machine is booting SmartSDR but uninstalling SmartSDR and all is ok.
I have also run SFC /SCANNOW to check all system files are ok

Andy, this likely caused by the DAX driver problems with SmartSDR installs. I also had this problem after reinstalling SmartSDR after Windows update ver 1903. You can open a help desk ticket for Flex assistance or use the guidance in this thread https://community.flexradio.com/flexradio/topics/dax-error-after-widows-update-1907-and-upgrade-to-2...?
If you follow Eric's comments you should note that the sound control panel has changed location in ver 1903. To open the sound control panel Settings -> System -> Sound -> Sound Control Panel (right side menu)

Hi Dave,
Thanks for reply,
I had the DAX renaming issue on my previous PC with the latest update as well and have checked the naming is ok.
I will check the rest of the items in the thread.
Interestingly it has set one of the DAX items as the default input device but because no Mic is plugged into the sound card I cannot change the default device. I will have to figure that one out.

@M5ZAP - to satisfy an inkling I have about completely clean installs, would you be able to install v2.5.1 first, then 3.0.27? I've seen some things with my machines that suggest the versions gain by building on each other.

When you say "install 3.0.27" do you mean on a PC that never had SSDR installed on it, or is it an upgrade of a prior SSDR installation, and if so, what version was previously installed (V2 or V3), and did you remove previous version before installing 3.0.27?0
-
Hi Ken,
It was a completely fresh install of windows, with 3.0.27 as the only installation on the machine. I repeated the process twice!
Hi Steve
As I have now installed 3.0.27 I will not be able to install in the order you suggest. If however in my fault finding I do another fresh install of Windows 10. I will install 2.5.1 first.
As a another point approximately 1 in 4 times windows does boot and then I can go on and run SmartSDR with no problems. The issue is that installing SmartSDR is the instigator of the failure as detailed.

May be worth doing a removal of 3.0.27, then doing the 2.5.1 followed by 3.0.27
No guarantees doing the 2.5.1 to 3.0.27, but I did find this technique a work around on one of my PCs.

Hi Steve I tried the procedure you described and although it booted ok with just 2.5.1 installed as soon as I installed 3.0.27 then the PC Boot fault issue came back. Has anybody else had this issue? Today it took over 10 attempts before the PC successfully booted.0

Andy: just ran across a similar problem. A brand new computer which was running fine with windows 10 1903 and SSDR 2.6.1. Today had notice to update the Dell BIOS which went fine. However, when I started SSDR I got a BSOD with PAGE FAULT etc and indication it was portcls.sys problem. Sounds a lot like what you experienced.
The Dell box was really flakey until I totally uninstalled SSDR and all elements per Tim's excellent instructions. It still threw a couple of BSODs, but rolling back to a restore point seems to have worked. Now, fingers crossed, computer seems fine without SSDR.
Just wondering if you have any updates from your last post? Did you find a workable solution? Many thanks.

Hi,
Just came home after 3 months away and updated radio and PC to 3.1.8 and still have the detailed blue screen issue. Does anyone know the solution? so I don't have to raise a ticket.

Andy: Not sure if my 2.6.1. experience applies, but my system is now stable. I basically followed the suggestions found on the community site. But, it took two full uninstall/install cycles before it settled down. Also, as someone had suggested, it took multiple BSOD/restarts even then. Sounds like you have already been through all of that plus some.
I also ran CCleaner on the registry.
Good luck on this. From my experience and what have read on the community, putting in a help ticket sounds like good advice.
