Filtering during rtty test
Greg
Member ✭✭
I noticed during the rtty contest the filtering did not seem as tight as I thought it would be. I was far enough away from some sigs that we're not too strong with my filter set to 220hz. This would normally be too narrow for rtty but sigs were decoding ok. You can see the noise thru the filter on the Mitty display. When some one was a bit close that noise display really widened up and I could here the tones even though they were outside the filter pass band. I don't know if this is Dax related or not. Still having fun though. 73 Greg

Greg I have noticed even in SSB that the filtering seems not as tight as Release Ver 1.0. Signals that are below the suppress carrier freguency seem to come through where in Ver 1.0 you would not even hear them. The high end of the band filter seems to be just as sharp as it originally was in Ver1.0, I have noticed this on 20m and 15m with strong and also moderate signals.0

I agree, Greg, with your observations in the RTTY Roundup. The filtering is "just not right". It was actually better on RTTY in the Ver. 1.0 than the present beta, in my humble opinion. Also still have been having fun but it is a little bit annoying at times. Mike0

I noticed this as well. Signals well outside my filter passband, as displayed by the "Blue Highlight" are audible, whereas on CW, the filters are razor sharp! My Solution? Run RTTY in LSB and drag the filters in. The passband is much more sharp at my station. I can see it on the K7RE RTTY Tuning Window.0

With as much activity as there was/is on 15 and 20 I just ran at 3khz bandwith and did a S&P. I was using fldigi and didn't have any issues. I guess if I was trying for the real weak signals then I would run about 300hz bandwidth.0
-
I will have to say that I can not wait until we get point and click for the digi modes to get the signal centered at 1500hz to match the set filter CF. It sure would be nice to have some audio feedback like the monitoring ability.0
-
If you are not too concerned with the filtering fldigi works ok and I suspect HRD will do ok but to be able to do S&P I would like to be able to get that signal centered. With a program like mmtty you will spend too much time tuning in the signal since the signal display on mmty has a very narrow bandwidth window.0
-
Yes...something just not right with the filter skirts in the DIG modes. Really hope this is fixed soon. I am about 80% CW, 19% digital and maybe 1% with that mic thingy.0
-
I prefer to keep the filters pretty tight. 270Hz but on DIGL that still lets blowby pass even weak stuff that just should not be there. I don't do any tuning by clicking in the MMTTY window....only using SSDR.0
-
Mine FLEX 6500 work like a champ on the ARRL RTTY Round up . I used FLDIGI and USB and LSB on 20/15/40m while contest with 215 contacts and 11,300 points0
-
So you are tuning SSDR with the FlexKnob or something similar as I do. I also set up the filter in mmty so it centers on 1500hz - 1415 and 1585 hz. Doesn't that take time to get the signal in the bandpass? I guess if you narrow the bandpass then just tune so mark and space are within the blue on SSDR that will work but life has got to be easier especially when working a contest like the rtty contest. That is where the point and click which we have in PSDR would come in handy in SSDR.0
-
Jim, My setup worked well, however, I was curious did you use S&P and did you run with narrow filters? I really think point & click like what is available in PSDR would be a great addition otherwise as you probably noticed you were doing a lot of tuning - at least I was. How come you were using USB and LSB rather than the digi modes? Were you using DAX?0
-
absolutely I used Flex Beta 1.0.24 and FLDIDI 3.21.77 version and it worked like champ , and it kicked **** for sure. Never had a issued even contesting for 6 hour and then going to sleep and restarting the next day. then 6 more hours of contesting for 11,300 points , have a good day.0

Similar here. I set the CF to 1445 and adjust the skirts to +/- 200 Hz or a bit less since the skirts are not too tight in DIG. I actually tried them down to +/- 100 which in theory should not work but it did and still got some wide noise through on the MMTTY display. Sorry for the bad typing...still on good pain meds for the back. What I really pray for in dig modes is to be able to click on a signal and have the Smart part of SmartSDR just put that signal centered into what ever filter passband is set by the user....just like it does for CW except there is an offset involved. Somehow this offset needs to be used to compensate for correctly tuning incoming spots as well. 73 Greg0

Good pain meds? Are you happy? Yes, add the feature that is present in PSDR - point and click to center the signal. Tuning is ok with a FlexKnob but it is slow especially during a contest. Just my thoughts.0

Bad sciatica back issues. Heading to the doc again tomorrow. Thanks.0

Nothing worse than back issues and then sciatica thrown in. Tough. Hope all goes well at the doc tomorrow.0

We are looking at sharpening up the filter skirts0
