Performance Prblem with v1.

Upgraded to v1 this moring and discovered a delay of up to 15 seconds in changing bands. I can set a freq on 20M and switch to 40M and the display shows freq is set outside the display area. between 10 and 15 seconds later the freq will change to something inside the display (not necessarly where i had it before changing bands). Switching back to 20M gives same behavor but it always goes to 14.225 (not where i left it). I see this behavor across all bands. Band change results in radio being outside the display area with the <0.00.0 display for several seconds. If i havn't used the band i have to click on a freq in the display and wait for 10 to 15 seconds for the command to execute. Nothing on PC has been changed (except for he S/W upgrade). Running XP with 32 bit maxed out. No other apps running except SDR and IE. Rebooted all and got same results. Acting like a memory management problem.

That is an unusual problem.. Shut everything down and remove DC from the radio for 30 seconds and try again.. If still operating like that, reload SmartSDR, I have not seen any other reports to this.

Also seeing very choppy s-meter. pan looks ok but everthing else has a slow response. Does this new version use alot more memory? I restarted everything before submitting problem. will remove DC and start over to see if problem resolves. Looks like part of my initial report droped. The radio returnes to 0.000 on the display with each band change and stays there for the time delay. Are you resetting the bands to the band edge and then loading the frequency?

I removed all power and shut down PC for about half an hour. Getting same results as before. Long delay for radio to go from 0.00.0 < to a freq in the band. On 20M it allways goes to 14.225 reguardless of what the freq was when i left the band. 40M always goes to 7,175.

This sounds like it might be a RAM memory swapping issue but you can easily rule this in or out. If the problem continues, how much RAM memory do you have in your XP machine? You can start Task Manager to see the % of CPU usage and the % of Physical Memory usage. CPU usage accurately reports usage up to 100% However, the Physical Memory usage is misleading. Experience has shown that Physical Memory usage above 70% really slows down computer response and Physical Memory usage above 80% often leads to an almost nonresponsive computer. If the CPU usage is high you can click once or twice on the CPU box at the top of the CPU usage column in Task Manager. More than one click may be required to sort the CPU usage so that the processes using the most CPU cycles are at the top of the list. If the CPU usage was high, make a note of the processes using the most CPU cycles and report that back. Also report the memory % of utilization. The Community can then help you rule in/out RAM swapping and a possible infection as the source of your problem. Good luck. Reg, KD5RB

Nick: In my previous post I should have suggested that you open Task Manager before starting the band change procedure that you described. Then observe the CPU and memory utilization before the band change starts and during the delay associated with the band change. Sorry for the omission. Reg, KD5RB

Here are the numbers Top 2 Apps - Smart SDR 56%, system idel 42% CPU usage < 60% PF flat 7.64 total memory 3.79 available 2.94 On band change CPU usage spikes to 100% for an instand but falls back to about 60%. Band chagne is instant but return of frequency bar is still delayed long after the CPU spike. I'm not seeing any delay on other s/w like outlook or word so that would tend to r/o a problem with the environment. In the prior version the radio always returned to the default on the bands. Has this version changed to read some value and then apply it to the radio? If no one else is seeing this problem it must be on the client side. I'll have to swap out PCs and see if it clears the problem. tnx, Nick

Where do you have Display FPS set? Any time I have sluggishness, this is the first thing I check. Too high a FPS setting on a minimal computer has been the main cause of display or control delays I have seen at my station. And yes, a faster computer, and especially, a better video card can make a difference.

Ken, I agree, faster is always better. I ran v0.13, 15, and 16 with the same settings and computer w/o seeing the problems i getting with v1.0. When trouble shooting a problem i always start with what changed. In this case the only change was to the radio s/w. There is defentaly a delay in communication between the client and the server (PC and radio). The PC i have dedicated to the shack is a 32 bit XP machine. My other cmputer is 64 bit on Win7. I want to make sure the problem isn't a bug in the s/w before i jump to an expensive solution.

Your problem seems to be a PC issue. What graphics card are you using? Have you updated the drivers recently?
