I ran across this video on YouTube, which deals with digital modes enhancements in SSDR v1.6:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV0kDWdFswc

Any rumors on the contesting enhancements that he mentions?

We are putting the final polish on the 1.6 release, so rather than rumor, we'll be publishing facts.  Stay tuned...

And when it comes out, do yourself a favor and take a look at the documentation.  You'll have a more harmonius outcome.

This might be a bit premature, but with the new mic stream, is there a way to record receive and transmit audio together? Most sound recording apps, such as Audacity or i-Sound 7, will only record from one sound device at a time.

I would be surprised if Flex overlooked this.

Bob, are  you familiar with Abyssmedia's Multi-channel Recording System program?

I use it to record 8 time stamped audio streams operating VOX simultaneously (it is capable of more than 8 separate channels for an additional price).

Hi Roy,

I had noticed that program back when I bought i-Sound, but have not thought of it since.

If 1.6 is not out in the next few days or doesn't have a way of combining transmit and receive audio, I will give their demo a try.  Thanks for the information.

You're welcome!

Another option is to use something like Virtual Audio Cable to merge two audio streams (DAX REC 1 and DAX MIC) into a single audio channel and record that stream using i-Sound Recorder?

Since I already have MCRS, I will just dedicate two of its 8 channels to DAX REC 1 and DAX MIC and name the files so that they will interleave in the file directory - then I can use MP3 Splitter Joiner Pro to merge a QSO into a single MP3 file.

Who would have thought this kind of stuff would be available a few years ago?

Ain't technology grand!

Has somebody breached their NDA by making this video? It is a strange way for a company to release information if it is not, hi hi.

Seems like there will be a lot to learn again, LOL. Hoe can one listen to several bands at once? How many antennas does one need? I just cannot get my head around how this aspect works - with one antenna (sob, sob) the issue is not that important. Would be useful to know if I win the national lottery (yeah, right).

I use a lot of the CW abbreviations in general brief communications like texting.  Some of my non-ham friends have even picked them up and started using a few of them. They are no worse than LOL and all the others we see everyday.

TNX FER a GUD time
CUL

Of course some of the less obvious ones are best used with ham friends.

Actually, old timers have told me that the telegraphic laugh was originally "HO" in the old American Morse Code.  The 'O' was made of two dits, but spaced further apart than the "didit" of an 'I' and closer than the "dit dit" of two 'e's.  It made a particularly recognizable rhythm on the old telegraph clicker, but didn't translate well to the tones of CW.  When the International Morse Code was introduced, the 'O' was changed to "dadadah" which was more recognizable.

HO actually makes more sense as a telegraphic laugh, but it evolved into "HI" and then a double "hi hi" in some circles in the transition to the "new" code.

I have read this in several sources, but have not been able to verify it completely.

Frankly I don't see much difference between HO HI and HA when keyboarding.  I would prefer any one of them to the cell phone texting abbreviations LOL, or ROTFL, or ROTFLPIMP (Rolling on the floor laughing peeing in my pants!)

I really do hope Chris does NOT get in trouble. It is a wonderful video presenting how to do digital modes with the 6700. FRS expressed here that 1.6 wasn't out yet because of the holiday season and not being able to answer potential customer support calls after a major upgrade due to employee vacation. I keep refreshing the FRS website waiting for it to pop up any minute now!

NDAs are legal documents for a reason. If a party to a legal agreement decides to unilaterally disclose information because, "it's time", that's kind of a big deal. It is, however, up to the other party to decide what, if anything, to do about it. But it is a legal document, for a reason.

Absolutely awesome, multi-tasking beyond my imagination, one would need at least 3X27" screens to track all of the action, I hope FRS will go for detaching panadapters so one can spead'em across different screens with their corresponding digital programs,  otherwise a single screen operation will be almost impossible.

When I was in grad school, i made a full wave loop for 20 meters (roughly 16 ft per side) and hung it from the suspended ceiling tracks around my room with paper clips, fishing line, and rubber bands.  I made contacts around the country, but I also contacted several of cheap stereo systems and TV's in other apartments in the dorm! Don't let antenna restrictions keep you off the air!  A BAD antenna is better than NO antenna!  (But it is frustrating if you once had a GOOD antenna.)

@K6OZY,
I figured it was either that, or that it was recorded in anticipation of a software release and may have been posted early by accident, by an "oops" on a privacy click box, or attempting to time its release with the software release that had a short last minute delay....oops.

In any case, The video is nicely done, and if the feature set holds and is accurate it looks like we are in for some really neat improvements that will be handy not only for contesters, but for the digital ops as well.  (But we all know that things sometimes can change at the last minute)

Some of the features demonstrated are applicable only to the 6700 with its dual SCU's, but many will apply to the 6500 & 6300 as well.

I will be very interested to see what they did with RX EQ...I hope it is linked to the mode as well so I won't need to adjust my RX EQ every time I move from SSB to CW and back.

Oh Well... additional speculation is pointless.  We shall all know soon...

Hi Chris,

I don't think that it was leaked. I am subscribed to your channel so it popped up when you posted it 2 days ago. I think that it was more of a YouTube issue.

It looks like 1.6 is imminent and there was no damage done, in my opinion. I really hope this has no consequences for anyone. None for you as your videos are great and I enjoy them very much and it would suck if you stop making them. None to the Alpha group at large (I am not a member of that group) as I believe no one leaked it and it would be detrimental to have bad blood looking for culprits.

My personal opinion is that not knowing what is to be expected down the pipeline of the Flex Radio hurts FRS more than stops competition from "copying" features.

There are ways to manage expectations. There are Probable features like WAN and Possible features like, maybe Pure Signal.

I would love an option to Beta test Release Candidates with a clear understanding that it is NOT a stable version of the software.

I am so stupid, after watching this video I want to sell my 6300 and buy anything but a Flex. I have a life outside of ham radio and if I have to go through all this to go on the air, forget it. The video is extremely well done and narrated, this reminds me of the early 90s when you had a long setup using something called Trumpet to get on the internet.

It turns out that the 4 channel limit on 6500s isn't actually a limit to channels 1 through 4.  As I understand it, any four channels can be selected.  I think if you try to enable a fifth channel (or third on a 6300), the code simply ignores your request.

The code does not provide a way to bind two or more DAX channels to a single slice.  I don't know if there is a prohibition for two or more programs that consume a digital audio signal from connecting and taking from the same channel.  I've never tried such a thing, but someone will jump in with a story in a few minutes, I suspect.

Now I've gone back and read your message again.  I'm sure you can bind multiple programs to a single DAX RX channel, if you run them one at a time.  If you had them running at the same time -- not sure what would happen.  You probably wouldn't set fire to the shack if you tried it.

As a matter of fact Ken explained it in exactly 281 words. Close to 200 if you remove the in parenthesis comments. If you put it together in a Letter size page at size12 font it will take half a page. Less with no line breaks.

So all digital modes explain in a couple of paragraphs and half a page. I would like to see the equivalent in any other piece of gear.

Either you are factual or you are just trolling.

Ken,
WIndows will allow you to connect more that one 'load' to a DAX Channel output. Thus, you could have 'FLDIGI' input and WSPR input connected to the same DAX output port.    And you can have serveal  program outputs connected to the DAX TX input port at the same time ( but only one actaully transmitting. at a time).  You can control the TX levels in the Windows Volumne mixer control panel for DAX TX or from with in the program.

Nice. I can't connect to more than one RX Dax channel at the same time in the current version 1.5. I get a message that says the Dax channel is already in use by another application.

For digital users, that video is incredibly promotional.  This is exactly the solution I was hoping dax/cat would evolve to.  This makes using digital apps VERY simple. Finally it is configure-once-and-forget-it.  I'm super hyped for this release. If I didn't already have a flex, this would definitely make me want to buy one.

You really think this setup is simple? Every time I shut down my computer I have to reconfigure DAX and CAT, would I have to do that with a non Flex interface? I already have a Flex, this video makes to want to sell it, but then there is the panadapter and Flex support

Burt, you should know what is simple to some is very complex and hard to others.   We each have our areas we work best in.

When I consider the "old days" of digital modes where you had cables from audio and mic to the sound card in on your PC and then you ran into issues with not really compatible sounds cards and the idea of running two sound cards in your computer so you could have the digital ham stuff and still keep your movies and music... yes this is SIMPLE!

I remember struggling to wire up connectors since some of the older rigs only had Mic in on the mic connector and audio from a jack in back.  And then there was PTT and how it was going to get triggered.  One program had you make a circuit from your serial port to key portion of your mic or other keying input.  So that meant more cables, more connectors, more wiring.

With the CAT/Dax solution, even in its current state, routing audio around is a matter of a few mouse clicks and from the looks of it the new 1.6 will make life even easier.

I would just like to inject a different point of view.  As mostly an outsider I have heard and read comments after previous releases about the incomplete Beta testing of the software.

I think this video shows, at least from a data mode perspective, that the person whom made the video takes the role of beta tester very seriously.

To this person...simply thank you.

Been a user and hanging out here for over a year and have not heard one complaint about incomplete beta testing. I have seen plenty of complaints of when will a certain version be released or many complaints of why is version 1.6 contest centered but not one about incomplete beta testing. I may have missed those complaints though.
