Not too long ago a member of the Flex Radio team mentioned that the next version of SmartSDR should show up in August or as late as September. August is just around the corner. And there is hope that Flex Radio will introduce some new features to SmartSDR that will excit those of us who purchased the Plus and Early Access licenses. I know that AetherSDR has probably raised expectations from everyone. And all of us hope that Flex Radio will make those of us that have placed our faith in the new development of SmartSDR glad we spent the money to get those new features.

So, maybe we should start a list of new features that each of us would like to see in SmartSDR and see how well Flex Radio fulfills those hopes and desires.

I will start with the most obvious. More slice receivers and panadapters. We have been told that the new hardware can support more slice receivers and panadapters. ( personally, I don't think that there should be an added cost for this feature. I already paid) Next, the radios ( 8000 and Aurora) are supposed to be able to present a full, wideband HF display. ( was told early on that there was hardware in the radios specifically for this feature) It would be great if the wideband display emphasized the Amateur Radio HF bands and let us view activity in them and select the band we want according to activity and once selected, go straight to that band. We can already do something like that with up to 4 panadapters on most radios. The 6700 can monitor 8 bands. But, a wideband full spectrum display with the hambands highlighted, would be way cool!

What are you looking forward to seeing in SmartSDR?

My self I'm disappointed. I thought by helping to support this software effort we would see more updates and improvements. I know by talking to some of my fellow Flex owners we will NOT be paying for another year of this support.

I plan to see how my first year goes. And afterwards, I will only purchase another year if something comes along that I feel like is worth paying for and will really benefit me. Otherwise, I am okay with what I have. And having AetherSDR as an option makes it even better.

I have been thinking the exact same thing I have paid $600 for two radios and definitely not worth it yet.
