I would not run that software anymore for many many reasons and you can upgrade to v4.2.18 for free. First, it is sooo slow.

I would also NOT run AetherSDR unless you have a computer that is maybe less then 3 or 4 years old as you will need more performance. I am making an assumption that your computer is pretty old since it crashed (actually the hard drive likely failed).

Why upgrade from SmartSDR v1.12 to v4.2.18?

It's free, and it's the only version receiving ongoing fixes. All future bug fixes and improvements are being developed exclusively on the v4 codebase. Staying on v1.12 means running unsupported software with no resolution path when issues come up.

DAXv2 dramatically improves digital mode performance. DAX has been completely re-engineered with a new audio transfer architecture that delivers lower latency and better stability. FT8 transmit audio stuttering is resolved, and Windows 11 Memory Integrity (Core Isolation) can now be left enabled without issues.

Full modern Windows compatibility. SmartSDR, CAT, DAX, and FlexVSP drivers now support 64-bit and ARM Windows systems. The legacy 32-bit architecture is gone, and the new installer handles dependencies far more cleanly.

New operating features included at no cost. Band Plan and Band Edge Markers with selectable IARU Region 1, 2, and 3 overlays are now available on the panadapter, and receive filters can be configured per mode.

One thing to set expectations on: SmartLink and MultiFlex are not included in the free v4 Basic upgrade for v1 radios. Since the 6300 shipped with a v1 license, neither of those features were available before, so nothing is lost. If he wants SmartLink or MultiFlex in the future, a SmartSDR+ license would cover that.

Bottom line: Same price (free), better performance, better digital mode stability, modern Windows support, and the only version that will keep improving. There is no reason to stay on v1.12.
