Why does the RF deck have to be attached to the knobs?

FlexRadio fundamentally changed the traditional concept of a ham radio transceiver by separating the RF hardware from the user interface. In conventional radios, the knobs, buttons, and display are physically attached to the radio itself, which means the entire unit has to sit on your operating desk. FlexRadio removed that constraint by designing the radio as a network-connected RF deck controlled entirely through software. By moving the user interface into applications like SmartSDR, the radio can be controlled over Ethernet from a computer, tablet, or even across the internet.

This architecture means the RF deck no longer has to live in the shack next to the operator. Instead, it can be placed wherever it makes the most sense from an RF or infrastructure perspective—near the antenna feed point, in a basement equipment rack, or even at a completely different location. The operator interacts with the radio through software that recreates and expands on traditional controls, often providing more flexibility than physical knobs ever could. The result is a cleaner operating desk, reduced cable clutter, and the ability to operate the same radio from multiple locations while the RF hardware quietly does its job somewhere else on the network.
