can I operate a Aurora 510 with just a PC?

Yes, that is how I operate my 8600 which, except for the transmitter, is the same as the Aurora 520.

Thanks. That's what I thought but wanted to be sure. 73, Al0

Not quite true on the CW part. There are ways to run CW remotely via a Maestro or a Morconi or use CWX.
Voice runs wonderfully by just using SmartSDR on a local PC. No extra cables required.
Digital also works perfectly over the network.

Now I am completely confused and concerned as I have an order in for the Aurora 510.
Points:
1. CW is one of my main modes followed by digital.
2. I have no intentions of operating remotely. The transceiver will be in my shack with me.
Looking at the back panel from the brochure, I see a mic and a key connector. I assume I can plug my keyer into the "key" jack and a microphone to the "mic" connector and operate CW and voice.
I would want to run digital modes using a form of "virtual audio cable", VAC, which is what I am doing now with my old Flex 5000C. It is my understanding that WSJT now has a VAC capability rather than using a third party VAC.
I also use the CWX feature of my old Power SDR. I assume newer versions of the Flex SDR software still has the CWX function.
Please clarify these items as I am expecting a delivery soon.0 -
Hi Al, yes that is exactly right. While you are waiting for your new rig, take a look at this user guide. It is still relevant, even though it references version 3.

This is part of the presentation I did at Orlando:
Why does the RF deck have to be attached to the knobs?
FlexRadio fundamentally changed the traditional concept of a ham radio transceiver by separating the RF hardware from the user interface. In conventional radios, the knobs, buttons, and display are physically attached to the radio itself, which means the entire unit has to sit on your operating desk. FlexRadio removed that constraint by designing the radio as a network-connected RF deck controlled entirely through software. By moving the user interface into applications like SmartSDR, the radio can be controlled over Ethernet from a computer, tablet, or even across the internet.
This architecture means the RF deck no longer has to live in the shack next to the operator. Instead, it can be placed wherever it makes the most sense from an RF or infrastructure perspective—near the antenna feed point, in a basement equipment rack, or even at a completely different location. The operator interacts with the radio through software that recreates and expands on traditional controls, often providing more flexibility than physical knobs ever could. The result is a cleaner operating desk, reduced cable clutter, and the ability to operate the same radio from multiple locations while the RF hardware quietly does its job somewhere else on the network.

Late to this comment, but with the Flex 6000, 8000, and Aurora radios they are controlled via network, not USB. So if you do not plan to do CW and Voice and want to do primarily digital you can mount the radio pretty much anywhere, near the antenna connection if you can get power and network to it.
I have a Flex6600. It is mounted in an outside shed where the coax comes in. I operate it from my laptop all over the house and even remote.
You can do voice and CW but must do them through the app or run cables to the radio if you mount remote. I'm not a voice op. I do CW but a lot of times via the app. I use a Mac and the SmartSDR mac has digital built right in.

Hi Al, yes - plug a key or keyer into the key jack and a mic into the mic jack. CWX is available on the Aurora.
You don't need VAC for WSJT-X, you would use DAX (Digital Audio eXchange), so no additional software (like VAC) is required. Check YouTube for videos on setting up WSJT-X with a Flex.

Thanks Len. One more, (I hope just one more.) question. I expect to connect my PC that I will use with the Aurora and the Aurora to an Ethernet switch. That is both computer and radio to the same switch. I also have an internet connection to this switch. It is my understanding that the radio, internet and desktop PC can all communicate. Is that correct?0

Hello Mike, VA3MW
When my Aurora arrives, hopefully in a few weeks, it will initially be located in my shack. My old Flex 5000C isn't on my operating desk but in a corner of my shack near where my antenna feedlines come in. The new Aurora will be in the same location; at least to start.
I appreciate the ability of the Aurora to be located almost anywhere, and I may move it out of the shack in the future. My feed lines are very old and need replacing. If I do that, I will likely consider rerouting them to a location not in the shack and move the Aurora to that location.
Thanks for your info.
