Current Requirements?

Has anyone measured the actual current consumption on the TGXL?

The user guide indicates that the power requirement is 12-16V DC @ 2A. Users state that the voltage should be higher. But I have seen no indication of the current consumption.

The reason I ask is that I have an 18V DC power supply rated at 1.3 A.

Is that sufficient?

    hi Geoff,

I run my voltage at 15 VDC [ShackMaster 600 ps).

I also have a West Mointain Radio RigRunner 4005i which shows voltage and current for each port. Let me check.

    Standing By…

I don't know how much difference there is between quiescent and tuning but I expect there must be some.

I have been running mine at 15.5 VDC no problems.

Currently I'm running at 14.7V because that is the uppermost adjustment on the Astron supply I'm using.

The guides says 2A to accommodate for any surges required for the motors. You can use any supply that is 15-25VDC and 2 amps supply or higher. It is hard to measure the peak current without a significant amount of bench time setup.

I bought a dedicated power supply for the Tuner Genius.

Mike…I can measure it myself. I have all the equipment to measure dynamic current. But as you said, I would have to set it up. It's not too big a deal, but I was hoping someone had done that already.

TG draws 14.78 volts, 0.63amps in operate mode. Peak during TUNE just under 1 amp.
To be safe a 15 to 18 VDC @ 2.5 amp supply should be used.

And while on subject the AG draws 0.38a @14.78 VDC and probably has peak current around 0.75a when switching ports.

and it would be good practice to add an appropriate sized fuse to protect against shorts or voltage reversal. The WMR RigRunner 4005i does use solid state relays with adjustable current limits per port. I only use it for low current devices. (TG, AG, band pass filters). Radio is connected direct to 45 amp Power Pole on Shack Master.

Dave…Great!. Thanks for taking time to measure it and post your results.

As I have several of these 1.3A supplies, I might just try one.

If that doesn't work I'll buy another. I just have so many various supplies already that I'd like to make use of something I have.

Just measure voltage and make sure above 14.7 VDC for TG. Preferably above 15.0 VDC.
As Mike mentioned, we have found TG operation, especially with firmware 1.2.17, is stable with the higher operating voltage.

If you have weird disconnects or other behavior that is not expected (not able to switch to one or more bands) after upgrade to any 4.x version, then export profiles with Preferences unchecked, factory reset radio and test with default settings. If stable, then import profiles, making sure Preferences is unchecked. This creates a fresh persistence database. Corruption of persistence database can cause the disconnects and other issues some people experience.

Thanks, so far so good on 4.1.x
