Operating WSJT X (FT-8) At a remote location

Question when operating the Flex 6400 with WSJT X (FT-8) Does this need to be done at the local station where the radio is physically located at ? Or can I take my laptop else where or install Smart SDR & WSJT X on a computer some where else and operate FT-8 ?

    Mike has laid out a superb case for a remote PC. For decades I ran an observatory, as most do, remotely. There were two computers due to the heavy load of computing. Mike mentioned programming the bios so that on power up the computer will restart, that is critically important!!


    Mike probably does this but I didn’t hear him mention that you need to be able to cycle power remotely. Lots of ways to do that. Digital Loggers makes superb internet based power strips. Should you be interested in using the DL switch look for one that has integrated internet pinging. What that does is the DL switch pings say google every 5 minutes and if no return is heard then you can program the DL to cycle power to the router and hopefully restore communication. The pinging attribute was a life saver!


    Mike mentioned latency and that can be a big deal, thus eliminated with the local PC.

    Great video and if you’re considering remote operation you should watch this several times!!

    Yes, I do have a way to turn off both of the inexpensive IBM Think Centers I run at the more (still on. Windows 10). Thanks to IoT devices (hundreds of them on Amazon) it is a pretty easy way to power cycle them if you need to. Personally, I never shut them down, but that is just me.

    I was operating my Hawaii remote on 6 meters tonight from my PC in NJ. Worked a bunch of JA’s, and Brazil and Argentina.

    hi Len,

    I wasn’t sure how I would like the 49” ultra wide monitor vs rework of the three32” monitors but I am really liking it. A little less vertical real estate but easier on the neck for viewing (less up and down movement). The OLED screen is bright and very clear.

    The MonstIR antenna on HI station is working very well since repairs this past spring. It has two passive elements for 6 meters giving 6 elements total on 42 ft boom. I really haven’t used it for 6 meters until recently when I saw a post on the 6 meter Front Range mail reflector about openings to Hawaii this week.

    I made the same change, from 3 monitors to a single Dell 49 inch when I upgraded my PC to Win 11. It is easy to set up multiple desktop layouts and switch between them with one click. Also like it.

    i been letting a friend and fellow ham use my Flex radio. For SSB and phone mode. He can operate it remotely from his apartment. Using a blue tooth mic on his laptop. For WSJT-X FT 8 he has been using Anydesk to remote direct into my Laptop here were the radio is located. Yes I agree with Mike keeping a remote PC available at the home station. I use Anydesk and Google Chrome remote PC access. The video explains this well. Thanks.

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
