As I understand it, you are signing into the built-in Maestro client head bolted onto the radio.
You can sign into that client, or sign into SmartSDR for PC or Mac software clients to also access your radio hardware. Signing in allows for connections involving SmartSDR DAX and CAT to choose the proper client that is connected to the radio.

"Signing In" on a Maestro, M-Model Front Panel, or SmartSDR for Windows is only required if you plan to access the radio remotely from outside your Local Area Network using the SmartLink feature.
If you only plan to operate Locally, or as a "stand-alone" radio, it is not necessary to "sign in" at all.

No, you never need to sign in. That is only for SmartLink/Remote operation.
