    Hi Len,

I think I read somewhere that microsoft is going to offer a paid service to at least provide security updates for WIn10 after the formal deadline. Have you heard anything like that ? Seems strange …

    Thanks, Russ KR6W

Hi Don, you can keep running Windows 10. There just won't be any more updates to it from Microsoft. Eventually, some future version of SmartSDR won't be compatible and you will need to move up to a Windows 11 (or whatever is the latest) machine, but for the foreseeable future, you should be OK.

0patch.com is the way to go, I think.

I have a Flex 5000a and Ken's patched PowerSDR, and Win10 updates have never caused me any problems. I'd like to stay on Win10, It's been suggested that folks can stay on Win10 as long as they turn off updates, (and now MS is stopping updates in a month from now, so that takes care of that.) But the machine is connected to the internet! If there are no more updates, then no security patches will be delivered. My computer will then eventually be vulnerable to fresh remote execution malwares as they are discovered, which is *every* month. I don't want to pay for extended MS support, and I don't want to buy a Win11 box, and I don't want to buy a new radio. I see that despite many pleas, no Linux version of PowerSDR is available. Is there any alternative to PowerSDR for running a Flex 5000a (with its ancient FireWire interface) on Linux? Any suggestions for a viable migration path are welcome!!

You can use a program like Malware Bytes to protect your computer. I have been using it with a Windows 7 machine for years without any problems. When I purchased it, it was a one time payment and free upgrades for life. I haven't checked pricing on it in a while. But, when Windows 10 support ends my Windows 10 machine will have Malware Bytes running on it. I too would like a program to run my 5000A on Linux. But, I don't see that ever happening.

Be careful. Some 3rd party anti-virus / anti-malware / anti-spyware programs have been reported to block SmartSDR and associated programs from properly installing or running.

Check to be sure that these important FlexRadio programs are listed on the "approved applications" list of the protections programs…..

I use at the remote — YMMV

    • No antivirus as I never surf on that computer
    • No firewall as it is behind a firewall already
    • Window 10 PRO - I will change if I change the hardware which is a IBM ThinkCenter

And, if it ever gets compromised, I would just FDISK it and start over. I was taught by some very smart AV people that once you get a virus, you can never be 100% it is removed.
