TNF for a nearby ham on the same band

May be too much to ask of the TNF but,
My ham buddy lives about a mile away. We both operate in the CWOPS Slow Speed Net on 40 meters that last an hour every Sunday night. He has a a KW. I may be at 7.028 and he is at 7.040. The 6400 TNF at full strength has little effect on notching him out. Any suggestions?
thanks John KØFUZ

Hi John, it sounds like a case of receiver overload. I assume that when he transmits, the entire noise floor of your radio jumps up - right? If so, have you tried reducing your RF Gain (ANT button on the left side of the SmartSDR screen)? If you can cut that way back, perhaps to -8 dB (i.e. 8 dB of attenuation) and still hear your net, that may help. The TNF doesn't help unless the carrier is within your receiver slice passband. Since he is up at 7.040 and you are at 7.028, the TNF is not in play.

Len, KD0RC

Also, the TNF is in the audio chain, not rf.

Maybe the filters are better on the 6700 as I have an amateur 5k away and can successfully notch him out on the same band. He is running a cheap amp (dirty) which i have seen and the 6700 with a single deep TNF kills him off allowing me to work stations within 2khz of him.
regards
Gary
