Why do I get emails about topics I'm not following?

In my profile I have checked to get notifications when someone answers my questions, but I get emails about topics/discussions I'm not following.

  The category Follow option is not for receiving notifications. I will post something in the future regarding the use of the category Follow feature later.

  For managing email notifications, please refer to the Message Board post, Managing Community Notifications (email and popups).

  I have notifications setup as well, and I have only received notifications I was expecting (like when someone comments on a thread I am following). I have yet to receive a notification that I was not expecting.
