SmartSDR v 2.1.33 broke DAX on remote systems

I have a (2 week old) Flex 6600, and all was working fine with remote access. After upgrading to SmartSDR 2.1.33, I find that DAX doesn't work any more on remote systems.  It does 2 strange things: first, the DAX interface shows 8 slices (where the 6600 supports just 4), and even when I start a DAX channel in SmartSDR, the corresponding button in the DAX i/f turns red and says "DAX is not connected to a radio." When using SmartSDR and DAX at home (i.e., everything on local network), all works fine (DAX shows 4 slices, which all will connect).  What do I have to do, to get DAX to talk to SmartSDR and to the radio?

Tech info:  I am running Windows 10 on the remote systems.  Behavior is the same on Windows 10 Education, Windows 10 Home, and Windows 10 Enterprise.

I was under the impression that DAX only works on a LAN and Not on WAN. So, what you are describing is to be expected. However, I am not sure how you got this working before... Andy KU7T

Thanks Andy, that is useful information.... now that I think about it, I must not have tried to do much with it before (other than noticing that it was there).... so perhaps it wasn't really working and I didn't notice it... I am thinking this is a mistake on my part.... what I had been hoping to do is to run WSJT-x on the remote system, but this won't be so easy if DAX is restricted to LAN...

DAX is working for me over VPN using Ria's VPN script.

So how does that work... You have to a computer running on home lan network to VPN into?

VPN software can be run on your router or on a Raspberry Pi. No PC needed.
