As a long time Unix / Linux geek, what OS does the 6400M use internally.

I am curious what OS does the 6400M run internally and what language is the software written in? Does the display use the same OS / software?

The display uses a version of Windows. The radio itself uses Linux. SSDR for Windows is written in C#. I would think they use some version of C for the firmware.
The display and the radio's firmware cannot be altered by 3rd party software. There are API's for Windows that 3rd parties can use to control the radio. Also, there are standardized ethernet commands that can be used from any OS and use software written in any language that you like. The info is all on FRS's website
Plus, there is a section here devoted to 3rd party developers.

Some years back I had a nursecall system that the server was Linux/Unix. I could deal with the CAT terminals but there was "a guy" who was their Linux guy. Knew Linux very well and I did not and do not. In fact still don't want to know.
All I can say is that good Linux programmers are worth their weight in gold.1
