Q5 Transverter using Maestro with Apple ear buds

I recently set up a Q5 144Mhz transverter. It seems to be working fine using SmartSDR for Mac. I'm using a set of wired Apple earbuds. The only issue I had was the mic gain was set to high based on reports from others.
I can't seem to get it to work on a Maestro C. I have settings similar to SmartSDR, The correct antenna ports selected, the offset and CTCSS set. On SmartSDR, I used the Default HDST mic setting with HDST set as the input. Bias is on and +20db is off. I have tried these the other way as well on the Maestro. With the monitor on, when I transmit, I get a squeal with some clicks. No audio gets out unless I always pick a time when no one is listening. I've also tried the other mic profiles as well. I do get the kerchunk from the repeater when I stop transmitting so I know it's activating the repeater correctly.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? I don't have the correct adapters to try a different headset at this point, but since it's working with SmartSDR, I'm hoping it's just a setting that I don't have set correctly.
Thanks
Ken
