My Power Genius XL amp puts out only 60w no matter what the input. Any suggestions on what to try?

  • Issue: Radio and amp were working fine putting out around 1200w calling a dxpedition on SSB.  As some point I realized that the power out through the amp was only about 60w.   The antenna SWR is 1:05:1.  The follow are results when I tune the radio
    • Rado tune power 10w, without amp I see 10w on an external power meter
    • Rado tune power 10w, with amp I see 60w on an external power meter and amp
    • Rado tune power 50w, without amp I see 50w on an external power meter
    • Rado tune power 50w, with amp I see 60w on an external power meter

I have rebooted the PC, cold booted the radio, reset the amp including turning all power off and unplugging from the wall for a while.

    Tom, Thanks for the reply.

    AB:Id=0, Vdd = 48.5v

    AAB:Id=2, Vdd = 51.9v

    Len, Thanks for the reply.

Based on BIAS values, looks like you lost one LDMOS. Also based on very low gain, there may be damage to the filter unit as well.

Open a support ticket and send it for repair.

When you get it back, invest in a good peak reading watt meter to ensure you do not overdrive the amp. The metering on the PG XL and PG XL app is slow for reading peak power on SSB.
