Sidetone on LAN but not near radio (4.1.5 ) ?

Perhaps I was hallucinating but last Saturday during ARRL DX CW I operated from a room at home but separated from my 8400 . I recall that while using SDC contesting software with the SmartSDR API via my LAN , I was initially getting a sidetone sounded via my laptop at my operating position AND could hear the sidetone emanating from a few rooms away where the 8400 was located . I turned off the speakers connected to the 8400 and happily operated the contest with sidetone via laptop . The next day I booted SmartSDR 4.1.5 and SDC software but had no sidetone from my operating position. I still don't . I asked the author of SDC about this and he informed me that he had a similar issue . He said he had it working once but nothing since that . I assumed I might have configured something wrong in SDC but I somehow doubt the author of SDC would do the same .

So, now I am confused and wonder if it is really possible , with 4.1.5 , to get a side tone (with "PC Audio" on ) when using contesting software like SDC while not directly at the radio ?
