Making an External Powered Speaker Default on 8400M

Still a learning curve for me, however, every time I connect to SmartSDR and then go back to the 8400M for front panel control the front panel speaker becomes enabled. I'm trying to operate with an external powered speaker ALL the time. The radio powers up with the external speaker enabled but disables it when I perform the above. Then I have to go back into the audio menu and disable it. I have even noticed this happening when sometimes changing bands. Is there a way to ensure the external speaker is enabled all the time?
Also, don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but every time the radio is powered down there is a very loud "pop" through the external speaker. I tried different powered speakers and have experienced the same results.

Consumer audio amps had “pop suppression” about 50 years ago, but Flex hasn’t figured it out yet.
