3rd option - static config

So currently as I understand it you either;

1. Have the radio and the maestro on the same LAN - they just find each other

2. You have the radio registered with startlink and the Mastro then finds the radio via checking what radios are registered with smartlink etc. maestro and radio are on different networks usually in different locations.

Has there been any thought about being able to manually configure your radio in the maestro etc. or define radio XYX on IP-1234. And ports 4994 and 4993. Meaning there is no need to check/register with smart link etc. you'd still need to do port forwarding or whatever is required on the radio but it would be much easier.

Just wondering what is on the roadmap for this kind of thing, of anything.

The flex radio itself is an amazing piece of kit. The networking side of things could be done some much easier (no disrespect to what has been done to date of course).

I know within myself I have gone down the flex path primarily for the ability to have a maestro and 8400 remote to each other.

    I would love to have the option to point to a URL or IP and connect that way. Either myflexradio.example.com, or 1.2.3.4, plus the two port numbers.

    Operate remote without Smartlink by using a VPN that supports Layer 2 broadcasts on the same subnet as SmartSDR does not have a direct IP addressing option. Note though that LAN traffic is not compressed. SmartLink traffic is compressed so it uses less bandwidth. I have been using SoftEther VPN from my hospital bed. Smartlink is blocked so I have no choice. It usually works but sometimes does not but if you have good bandwidth at both ends, it is a solid option.

    I think there is an article on the Flex website about VITA49 and the SmartSDR Ethernet API but the computer I have with me doesn't have my bookmarks and I cannot find that article. Ask Mike VA3MW - he knows all there is about the subject.

    Erik.
