SD Cards

Been out of HR for a while, and catching up and planning what to do.

Saw in products>accessories a V2 and V3 SD card, so depending on what version i decide, do I have to replace my original SD card? What is reason for these? Just replacement if current card fails? Why difference version cards?

Tnx,

Olaf

There are currently two versions of SmartSDR that Flex Radio supports. Version 2.x just gets maintenance releases and bug fixes, but no additional features. Version 3.x is the current version and gets bug fixes and on occasion a new or improved feature. The SD cards being sold on Flex Radio's website are for customers who need a replacement or backup card for the current version installed in their radio. You need to check what version is currently installed in your radio. If you have version 2.x you can purchase an upgrade to version 3.x online. If you are simply needing or wanting a backup for your current version, you can purchase that as well. It is possible to make a backup copy of your current version's SD card in case the card in your radio should fail for some reason.

Hi Olaf, Flex made these available so that people wouldn't have to wait for a free replacement in the event of a failed SD card. I did have a card fail in my 6400 and got a new one in just a few days. In the meantime, while SD cards can still fail, it is reported much less frequently with the new versions of SmartSDR.

If you get an 8000 series radio, they can't be used, as Flex replaced the SD cards with a different form of non-volatile storage.

You do not need to replace the original card if you upgrade. If you have or are planning on getting a V2 radio, you can upgrade it to V3 without replacing the card, but you will have to pay for the upgrade.

The two versions are available so that V2 users and V3 users with 6000 series radios are accommodated.

    James,

OK thanks for answer, sounds like no advantage replacing my current (original) card unless I want backup.

But why different cards for the different SmartSDR versions?

Is there a dependence on whether you have a 6000 or 8000 unit?

    Tnx agn,

    Olaf

The cards are physically the same thing. If you order a new card you have to know what version of SmartSDR you are using. That way the software that is on the card will be the same thing that your radio has in the firmware. When you order a new card Flex Radio will send you a card with the correct files on it for the version installed in the radio. That way it will have the correct files and directory structure. If you order a card with version 3 software on it and install it in a radio with version 2 installed, it will raise an error when you boot the radio up. ( mainly because of different files being present or not)

That's why they ask which version of SmartSDR is installed in your radio when you order a new card.

When ordering a SD card radio's serial number has to be provided to Flex Radio.

    Everyone thanks for your replies.

Sounds like if I stay with v2 and get the latest v2.12.1, I'm OK with my original SD card (2018), and don't need even a newer v2 SD card.

But if I decide to go to v3, need v3 card and will give my SN when ordering.

    Thanks again,

    Olaf

Hi Olaf, you never need a new SD card unless the one that you have is not working properly.

If you move up to V3, your existing SD card will be updated as part of the process.
