Mistery of COM Ports (SmartDax)

Hello to all Readers

SmartDAX:

In the past, I have had to redefine the ports that were defined in the DAX several times, for whatever reason. But each time the Com Port number was incremented.

  • Why is that?
  • How can I delete them (blue)?
  • What are the ComPorts 1xx (three digits) for?

    Daniel,

Let's start with the last question first..

Virtural com ports come in pairs ( i.e. Com10 is paired with Com 110 ) . The three digit port number is automatically routed to the radio by the SSDR CAT app. It's a WIndows necessity that they be shown in the device manager.

You should be able to the Remove the unused Com ports in the SSDR CAT GUI and then uninstall them in the Windows Device Manager. Remember to the pairs that you wish to retain ( 28,29,30,128,129,130 ?? ) . You should also turn on 'show hidden devices' in the Device manager and initall any hidden Com ports. Reboot the PC and verify that only the desired ports are retained.

I am at a loss as to the why redefining DAX ports would effect Com ports.

    1) Your CAT COM ports sometimes get hosed up if CAT is running when the computer is rebooted, especially when Windows Update does an automatic Restart after an update.

ALWAYS close SSDR, DAX, and CAT before rebooting the computer.

    2) As mentioned before: CAT COM Ports are created in pairs — the lower number is the "Outside World" end of the virtual Serial Cable. The higher number of the pair is the "Radio End" of the virtual serial cable.

    3) Use this document to reassociate CAT COM Ports:

    I've done it.

Click on the COM port to be deleted, right mouse button, delete device.

    Thanks
