Using USB Hubs on 8600

Reading the new hardware reference manual for the 8600, I am somewhat confused about the use of USB Hubs. As I always seem to run out of USB ports, I am surprised to see that self powered Hubs are not recommended as they "draw too much current". I always thought that self powered hubs would reduce the overall USB server load current.

The HUB I am using is a self-powered 3.0 Hub and I do see some odd connection problems. According to the manual, that's to be avoided and I should stick to 2.0 as well.

Since some of these peripherals may need USB power, what is the recommended HUB to use if I shouldn't use a self powered one?

From the manual:

"Do not connect “self-powered” USB Hubs to the USB Ports. They will draw too much current.
Also, do not connect them to “USB 3.0 Hubs” The ports are not designed to drive multiple USB 3.0 connections"
