Since 3.7.4 does not support the 8600 the answer is Yes, A new version of SSDR.

I have a 8600 on order but still plan to use my 6700. I wonder if there will be a "universal" version of SSDR which will detect a radio connected and provide presets relevant to that radio.

The installer for the firmware (SmartSDR) recognizes each version of the 6000 series radios and installs the correct updates for each radio. From the 6300 to the 6700 the M model radios and everything in-between the setup and install works correctly. Adding the 8000 radios should not be any different. It should be a transparent setup and install.
