Static IP Address

The preferred way to assign a static address to your Flex (or any other device on your network for that matter) is exactly as you mention - use the router to bind, or assign, an IP address based on the device MAC (hardware) address. Just be sure to specify an IP address that is not in the dynamically assigned range. I always start dynamic assignment high, maybe 150 or so on a /24 net (which almost everyone uses).

You can use a static IP address, but generally it is better to use an IP Reservation in your router to keep the same address. Mine did that automatically. I think I selected uPNP, but it has been 3 years and I haven't had to change anything - it just always works.
Check out the user guide, it will get you right where you need to be.
