Auto screen brightness control on Model A Maestro?

I have a Model A Maestro with a screen that when compared with a model B is somewhat dim. Moving the display brightness control has little effect.

I was playing around with the tablet itself (out of the Maestro case), and I noticed that the screen is much brighter when removed. I thought this unusual until I moved the tablet away from the bright light on my workbench and the screen dimmed. Back under the bright light, it brightened up.

So I looked at the mounting of the tablet in the Maestro case and sure enough, the ambient light sensor is covered by the Maestro bezel.

Can any of the Maestro engineers tell me if this sensor is (or should be) disabled in firmware? It makes no sense to have the sensor active when it is not exposed to the ambient light. Or am I missing something?

Thanks,
