Why Do We Bond Our Grounds to the Service Entrance?

Here is an excellent video on Electric Code Requirements for bonding communications equipment to the service entrance. The video also explains the basis for the requirements.

As Amateur Radio operators, and owners of expensive Flex equipment, we have an understanding of importance of RF grounds and lighting protection. But, perhaps, no so much understanding of the requirements for and why we bond communication equipment to a single point at the service disconnect.

Pay particular attention to the scenario where a tree limp falls, or a car runs into your service pole (my own personal experience), and the utility neutral wire, leading to your house, is broken. This seems to me a more severe and more probable event, when compared to lighting....or at least equal.
