essentially DAX (for logger DVK) and "remote' PTT

while prepping for SS phone, I ran into a problem with DAX enabled, and being able to use a "remote" footswitch. When the "remote" footswitch is pressed, the radio would go into transmit, but, no audio would go out the radio. If VOX mode is enabled (the ONLY change), then when I spoke into the MIC, the radio would go into transmit, and audio would go out the radio.

The usual contest sequence is: speak into the MIC "W1AW 100", then press a function key, where the logger program would play a previously recorded message. "M K6TD 70 santa clara valley".

The logger plays the prep-recorded message thru DAX, so DAX is enabled for the slice.

The "remote" footswitch sends XMIT 1, thru API.

Is there a different API command that would provide the same functionality as the hardware PTT, in this configuration?
