PROFILES - POST 2.4.9

Has there been any documentation published regarding the changes made to profiles in 3.x and beyond. I had profiles pretty much figured out up to 2.4.9 but NOW, since I've been forced to go to 3.11.1 due to an SD card failure and corruption issue, i find myself and others in a quandary.

I know there's been a lot of concern over this "profile" issue and I'm not looking to stir the **** any more. However, the only documentation I can find on Profiles is the OLD doc in the support section. "Profiles in SmartSDRJanuary 2016 by Ed Gonzalez, KG5FBT".

I'm just trying to understand the NEW philosophy behind the change and how they should now be constructed. If we're going to be saddled with this change, with no hope of reverting back to the old way, then I'd like to see some documentation updates.

Thoughts? Anybody?

The only real change is the added auto Save feature, and it is covered in the release notes I believe. Other than that i don't think there has been a reason for adding to what you have already read.

    Thanks Bill,
I'll look at the release notes to see what I can garner.
Even so, the Doc should probably be updated to reflect the release notes. Albeit a small change.

There is a large detailed section about Profiles in the SmartSDR User Guide.  It was substantially updated when Version 3 was released.

    Thanks Dave,

    I'll check that out also.
I wasn't prepared to go to 3.x mainly because of this profile issue. But now I guess I have to bite the bullet for a few reasons.

Joe, it depends how you use the radio, For me it never gets in my way, I never have trouble with it,,but for some? yes. Here is a good pointer for you. Save a gold standard profile in a safe place in case you need it. Some people have trouble when they are making changes to the EQ or mic settings or power settings while they are operating and those changes are being auto saved. Now they have lost their settings. to help avoid this, make sure all your settings are back to what you want before shutting down. And if you have know idea where the settings were, then just import the known good profile you saved.

Bill, when you say save a gold standard,  do you mean export? Or just save as a different name, but never actually use that one. Tell me if my scenario is correct:
    1) Set the radio the way I want. Save global profile "40m w amp" or whatever.
    2) Now save it again as "SAVE 40m w amp"
    3) Load "40m w amp" and operate.  Now I **** up some settings....
    4) Load "SAVE 40m w amp"
    5) Resave as "40m w amp" and then operate again.

    Thanks...Paul

Lol,, What I do is export my gold standard profile for safe keeping. But what you are doing a good thing. what I do is say, make two mic profiles called 1 and 2. both are the same. I use 1 all the time, but if I change something and lose the setting, I bring up 2, then re save that and call it 1 again. This way I always have a profile I can revert to on the fly. Just keep going back and forth re saving them and renaming them.

to make this even more clear,,I always make two profiles the same. I call them headset1 and headset2. I use headset1 all the time. but if something happens I bring up headset2. Now I bring up headset1 again with the messed settings and re save it leaving it the same name. All the settings I am using at that time are now saved in the headset1 profile. hope that makes better sense?

And this is exactly why we should have the old way back....

I really like the newer method.  why is it so hard to load your golden profile.. having dynamic changes solves numerous use case issues.  you make an adjust.. its persists.. you want you old setting back.. load the profile back up.

think of reloading your profile like putting tape indicators on your preferred settings in the old days..

I have about 20 profiles... Different mics, different activity per mic, etc... So I have to make 20 "golden profiles" for these profiles and have a total of 40 profiles just in case I make a change in one that I don't like? On top of that, there is no profile management. I cannot rename or sort the profiles.

do you see this as a mainstream use case?

I cannot speak for all ham operators, I doubt anyone can, but freedom to setup the radio the way I like is what attracted me to Flex radios. Instead of being stuck with the original design of a knob radio, the Flex, by virtue of being software, had the potential for a GUI tailored to my needs.

It is far from it. And every change makes it more and more difficult to extract that potential, in my opinion as I user.

Will everyone have 4 or 5 different microphones? I have no clue. But I do, and I like to be able to have better control over Profiles.

I should be able to group profiles, rename them, order then to my liking, define hot-buttons on the screen for my favorite profiles.

I have mic profiles that I created over the air while the correspondent would advise me on more or less treble, bass, etc... I named those profiles after the ham that helped me. If I, by chance, make a slight change over the profile I loose it. I have a backup of the profiles, and I can recall them from those file. But I have found that some of the older profiles created back in version 1, will not work.

Some mics require BIAS, others don't, some I use through front mic connector, some through the balance XLR, and others with the Maestro.

I would like a subset of Profiles that only show up in the Maestro, as right now it is cluttered and difficult to easily get to the profile I want.

I have different profiles for same mic for different circumstances, such as Rag-chewing, vs DX, vs Contest, vs Breaking a Pile up profile.

I have Wide FM as close to Broadcast quality profiles.

The way it is right now, all the really cool aspect of having profiles is completely broken for me.

I have no way of undoing a change which might not be desired to keep.

Furthermore, I find the solution to the problem to be rather simple. A toggle switch, where I can select persistence for Profiles (the new approach) or not persistence for profiles (the old approach). That is it.

The beauty of SOFTWARE is that you don't have to choose a way for all operators, you can make it so the operator can make it the software their own.
