Radio TX profiles not saved after power down/up

Rick - W5FCX
Rick - W5FCX Member ✭✭
Running SmartSDR 3.1.7 and my radio transmit profiles are not being saved.

I have an amplifier that requires specific TX profile settings, which I have configured three different times now. Each time I configure it, everything works perfectly. And I save those profiles as both Global profile and each time use Create transmit profile and the new TX profile shows up. It also shows up in the Radio configuration dialog (pulldown menu), where I can select it.

Then, I power the radio off and back on. All TX profiles are now gone and everything is back to Default TX profile.

What am I doing wrong?

Rick

Create mic and TX profiles then select the TX and Mic profiles on the control panel.

Yes, that works. After radio power down and back on those profiles do not persist. Are they supposed to? Is it a bug or what?

might be a bug in 3.1.7 try the 3.1.8.
17 wasn't out very long before they went to 18
also you may want to EXPORT your profiles which ca save your settings to the desk top
    hope this helps

Rick, if you own a 6400/6600/M and are holding the power button down until it turns white (that takes several seconds), you are performing a factory reset and this behavior is expected.  If you own another radio or are not doing that please submit a helpdesk request. I haven't heard of this behavior in any of our radios running 3.1.x, they can help sort out what is going on.

Okay. I’m powering the 6300 radio down remotely via web power switch to 12 VDC supply. Will try latest version then open ticket if issue persists.

I have a 6600 and it does that same thing , I opened a service ticket a few months ago and Flex sent me a SD memory card , have tried more then one card over time . I am still having the issue, tried a lot of different ways to save transmit profile , but only thing that works is to leave Flex power up all the time. Ray WB0HHM

This is the wrong way to shut down the radio.  By just turning off the power, the database does not have an opportunity to save the profiles.  Use the REM ON feature.  And if you are using an M model radio, you should apply DC power to the radio first, wait 2 minutes for all of the different processors to fully boot up before turning on the radio using REM ON (or the power button) to load the radio firmware.  Shutting down should be the reverse of this process.

I am using REM ON feature, Tim. I've been using it on both 6700 and 6300 for years. This used to work just fine... now the TX profiles are not being saved as they are made.

In my view (as a user), this is a bug. The Global profiles and other changes are persisted as they are made. Clearly, as a user that's the expected behavior.

Please accept this as a request to properly persist all profile changes as they are made or shortly thereafter. In the meantime, I will use your suggestion as a temporary Workaround.

    Thanks.

Based upon the release notes (and Tim's guidance), it doesn't appear to be a supported feature (or it's a bug, depending upon your point of view I suppose). Thanks.

I usually leave power supply on , lately I have been using remote RCA Remote plug to shut Radio down , before that I used power button on radio , either way I lose profile Intermittently . Sometimes it would work prefect, which made me think that did I do Something different that time . I feel better now , I thought I was the only one having the problem, I been using transmit profile since getting KPA 500 AMP only takes 23 -25 watts to drive , I realize that I could set over all power in Radio settings , I have another Ham remotely using radio at Times so at times use a profile for no amp with 100 watts. No a big deal these days with all that is going on

I used the REM ON feature (manually) to power down the radio after creating the TX profiles. It works. Thanks Tim.

I believe persistence is via SD card. Mine had to be replaced a few years ago.

So has anyone found the solution to the problem with the TX profiles disappearing?

I did the SD card replacement with no results.

The "work around" I have used is a bit tedious but seems to work. I export the newly created TX profile, then delete the profile on the radio I just created. Then I import the profile back in. If the profile won't import, I know it was "corrupted". So, I create the TX profile again and repeat until I can export/import the profile reliably. I have never had one of these "verified" profiles mysteriously disappear like I have with TX profiles that I don't verify.

Ken, NM9P, resolved my Flex 6600 issue ! In short, I was using the "Create" command as a Tx profile saving function, whereas "Create" is used only once to initiate a profile. If the user makes changes to the "TX Band Settings" table, the changes are saved as the edits are made. Then, the profiles are selected from the "TX" menu in SmartSDR. I have included Ken's steps from this morning:

    ************************ From Help Ticket, Ken NM9P ********************************************

I suspect that you are making your changes in the wrong order.

    1) You must first create a Transmit Profile and select it from the Transmit Profile pull-down menu in the "Radio Controls" Panel.

    THEN
    a) Make all of your changes in the SSDR "Settings > Radio Setup > TX" tab
    b) and your SSDR "Settings > TX BAND SETTINGS" table.

The two items above (a and b) are saved independently in each different TX Profile. The TX Profile Name is displayed in each of the tabs.

If you create a new TX Profile, you must select it and THEN make any changes to the TX Profile.

    2) "Create" is used for the Mic and TX Profiles because once they have been created, and are selected as the "Active" Mic or Transmit profiles they "Auto-Save" whatever changes are made to their settings while they are active.

Global Profiles operate in a different way, and must be manually "Saved" after changes are made to them.

    Ken Wells, NM9P

See if this process will work for you. Ken with the Help Desk helped me…

    Try this variation.

    1) Create the Transmit Profile and name it FIRST.

    2) Be sure that the name of the Transmit Profile is showing in the little Transmit Profile Pull-Down menu in the "Radio Controls > TX" sub-panel.

(Here is a copy of my TX Profiles list)

     3) NOW make your power changes using the RF Power and TUNE PWR sliders  (These are auto-saved in the TX Band SETTINGS Table on a band-by-band basis.)

    4) Make any additional changes necessary in the TX BAND SETTINGS TABLE   or in the "Settings > Radio Setup > TX" tab.

(These are all part of your Transmit Profile and are auto-saved whenever you make a change to one of the paramters.)

NOTE:  If you make a change by typing numbers into one of the boxes, you must hit the TAB or ENTER keys to "set" the number into the window.

    5) NOW:  Export your Profiles to a folder on your computer.

After exporting the Profiles, hit the IMPORT Profiles button and look at the directory to be sure that the profiles were saved

(Check the date code to be sure the two files have today's date and time code as part of the filename.)

If it did not save properly, you need to explore why not..... Is the Export dialog pointed to a folder that can be written to?

    6) If it is in the list, close the window and close SmartSDR.

Reopen SmartSDR and see if the profile is in the Transmit Profile pull-down list:

If it is still there.  Close SmartSDR and turn the radio off.

Wait a few minutes and turn the radio back on with a short-press of the power button.

(Do not do the long-press, or you will factory reset the radio and delete the profiles that are saved in the radio's memory.)

    Open SmartSDR.

Check the Pulldown list and see if the new profile is in the list.

Select it and see if it loads correctly.

If it does, then you can test to see if it will import properly after a Factory Reset.

    FACTORY RESET THE RADIO:

Perform a Comprehensive Cold Boot and Factory Reset of your radio

     NOTE:

Before starting, shut down all programs that may interface with the radio.

    NOTE:

If you have a cable connected to the REM ON connector, please remove it before running the reset procedure.  Reconnect it once the procedure has been completed.

Before you get started, please note the "wait times" in the steps listed below.  These are important to ensure the radio resets properly.

    • Power off the radio by pressing and releasing the power button. Allow it to completely power down before continuing by waiting for the power LED to turn off (or amber if a GPSDO is installed). If pressing and releasing the power button does not shut down the radio, press and hold the power button until the radio shuts down.  If this does not work, turn off the DC power supply to shut down the radio.
    • Once the radio is powered off, wait for 2 minutes to allow for all processors to shut down properly.
    • Remove the power cable from the radio for at least 30 seconds and then reconnect it.  It is important to remove the power cable from the radio and not just turn off the power supply.
    • After reconnecting the DC power cable, turn the DC power ON and wait for 2 minutes to allow the internal PSoC processor to boot up completely before continuing.
    • Press and hold the Power button for approximately 5 seconds until the Power button LED turns whiteAfter the power button turns white, release the Power button and allow the radio to continue booting normally. Depending on different network factors, it may take up to 2 minutes for the radio to finish booting so please be patient and allow it to boot up completely.

Open SmartSDR for Windows and connect to the radio.

Open the "Profiles > Import/Export Profiles" tab.

Select the "IMPORT" tab in the window.

Hit the "Browse" button and find the newest profile (look at the Date and Time Code on the filenames.)

Select the newest Profile data file and hit the IMPORT button.

Wait for it to load up.

Now check the Transmit Profile pull-down list and see if it has been restored to the list.

Click on it to load the profile and check your power and other settings.
