Smartlink with ATT 6145B Modem/Router

We are trying to get  smartlink to pass its testing with a wireless router/modem from ATT, 6145B. It says it does uPnP but it will not pass the test. It also says it does port forwarding but Smartlink also will not pass the test.

Anyone done this with this modem/router?

I have read some users who basically turned off these features in the modem/router and put a discrete router behind it and used that for port forwarding. Is this a better idea?
