DAX (Digital Audio eXchnage) is the application that you use to interface the FLEX-6000s audio with PC applications like digital mode programs. SmartSDR CAT is the program that lets you connect PC applications that communicate to a radio via the CAT protocol.
If you use a digital mode program, like FLdigi or WSJT-X with any FLEX-6000, those programs have to communicate with the radio to control putting the radio into transmit and back to receive, read the frequency of the radio and other radio functions, like setting filters of the radios or mode (digi, SSB, cw). These programs normally use a serial (com) port interface between the PC and the radio and communicate with each other using the CAT protocol. The FLEX-6000s do not have a physical serial port on them, so we provide the SmartSDR CAT programs and a virtual serial port to emulate the radios serial port. This allows those programs to control the radio without having to use a cable between the radio and the PC. It is all done with software.
The same digital mode programs have to transfer audio with the radio for receiving and transmitting the digital modulation. The function of a PC sound card is to digitize the analog audio from the radio so that the PC digital program can utilize the data (programs only understand binary data). With the FLEX-6000, the audio is already in a digital format, so it makes no sense to convert the signal into an analog signal, run it over a physical wire and re-digitize it with a lower grade consumer grade PC sound card, so we provide DAX to emulate a PC sound card so the digital mode programs can connect to it rather than a PC sound card.0 -
Tim don't plan on running Digital but do plan on linking my logging program to my radio, the Dax control panel came up and also the smartsdr cat came up on top of it but after I closed them out they have not came up. I assume when I get ready to lnk my logging program I will be able bring it up.

Don, if you are referring to the fact that DAX &CAT shortcut icons appear in desktop, you need to do nothing as they are there for your convenience should you need to change parameters in either. They also normally appear on task bar. You can handle them as with any other program shortcuts. Bob0
