I've reviewed the procedure for setting the AGC-T control. This control works well for the intended purpose, but why couldn't the underlying algorithm be merged into AGC, which would eliminate having to manually set AGC-T?

The AGC-T control for sdr's function basically like an rf gain control on non sdr rigs. If you have a lot of background noise you lower the agc t to say 24 then turn up your af (volume) to say 75 and now you dont hear hardly any hash.
Until a computer routine can be created to distingiish between an s reading of say 7 that is all hash and noise and an s reading of 7 that is a good voice signal I dont think we will see this automated.
I generally dont set a specific level according to the setup in the manual but usually start between 30 to 40 based on band conditions and most of the time end up lowerering it to closer to 24 to 28 once I zerord in on the signal of my target.
I dont think many would be happy if ot was all automated like you suggest.
You can always just leave it about 34 and you will mostly be happy and its saved in persistence or a global profile so if you dont want to fiddle with it uou dont have to.2 -
There is a knee or a sweet spot to find. The proper adjustment is directly tied to the way the AGC behaves. Also It should be adjusted per each contact, the conditions in one spot of the band may be different then another up the band or lower, so slight adjustments should be made. The AGC-t is not a set and forget tool. So you don't set it for different bands, you set it for the place you wish to receive for best performance.
In order to get the best performance follow the recommended setup prosedure.
An auto AGC-T has been suggested, Flex said under consideration .0 -

Automating the AGC-T setting is the second most requested idea on the list with 66 votes.
The idea would allow you to set a value above the noise floor to maintain automatically or still do it manually if desired. See mockup below.

That's a good explanation of how AGC-T works.... I usually run mine around 17 to 25... & AGC set to Med for rag chew. If you have a weak signal, bump up Pre Amp or raise RF gain (AGC-T ) . I know a ham that sent his 6600m back because he did NOT understand how to run the radio... I had even offered to help him if he ever needed help...... HE NEVER ASKED..
He went & bought an Ickcom 7610... ****... Oh... I forgot to mention.... I have a S7 neighborhood noise level....1 -

Hi Doug,
Here are the steps to display the IDEAs sorted by number of votes. They will appear on your main screen in the lower right after setting this up. You can always go back to the default of showing "problems" if you want but I leave mine set for the idea list.

By the way, when Tim refers to this idea (Automating the AGC-T) as being #119 on the feature list, that is an internal list FRS keeps and we don't have access to it. (at least that is my understanding).

Have you tried leaving AGC-T on zero? With good receiving antennas, mine sits on zero most of the time. Lowest noise result. If audio level is too low, use the receive EQ to boost some or all audio frequency ranges, or amplify audio output.1
