CW setup

Hi
I use a Flex 6300 remotely with the Maestro for CW.
Occasionally when operation CW on the Maestro and I start transmitting the Level and compression metres go full scale as though I'm over driving the signal. I change mode and then change back to CW the metres don't register.
This has got me thinking, am I transmitting a poor distorted signal and not aware of it ? Is the metre behaviour normal and do I need to reduce the levels ?
I have looked in the manual and I cannot find any reference to CW level control.
Any help would gratefully be appreciated.
