How long do I have to decide between 6400M and 6600M?

How late in the process can I change my order between a 6400M and 6600M without it affecting my shipping/delivery date?

A friend of mine changed from a 6400M to a 6400 and lost his place in line, so I assume if you change your mind, you lose your place.

Actually that would make sense, because the 6400M and plain 6400 have different production dates.  A friend of mine changed (upgraded) from 6400M to 6600M a couple months ago and said it was no problem at the time. I wonder it that's still the case.

Up until the point just before your original order ships.  As noted, you will probably be "re-cued" if you make a change.
