I am running the 6500 with the SPE 1.3k and DDUtil. I am using the USB to PC cable as well as rhe PC DB9 to amp DB15 cable. I can control the power just fine. You need to make sure the amp is set for Kenwood CAT control and not Flex. Use DDUtil AutoDrive to set the initial power per band and then you can adjust it up or down from there. Hi Paul,
I have the same set up except I have a 6500. It is working flawlessly.
The ALC has no effect since it is not connected.
If the Flex is connected to the expert 1.3 with Dan's USB cable the amp controls the radio power out level when the amp is in the operate mode. You set up a power out level for each band and each power level (low-mid-high) using the buttons on the 1.3K panel. Instructions are not real clear but are in the Expert manual.
When the amp is in standby you can control the Flex output level with the slider on the Flex display.
I can send more detailed instructions if you need them.
Hope this helps.

I should have said that the ALC is not used with the USB cable. As far as I know the ALC does not work very well, that is why Expert programmed the 1.3k to control the power input level.

If it is like the 2KFA you set the power with the amp's right and left arrow buttons when the amp is in operate. The radio will then set that power each time you switch from standby to operate. See page 39 of the 1.3 manual for an explanation of how to set the power for each band.0
