A recurring statement made by FRS is something along the lines of "The software is the radio" a concept which I fully embrace. The recent release of the first public version in the 2.x software series demonstrates this concept.
I look around my shack at the other investments I have made and I see several mixer radio which much like a car will be the same until end of life is reached. The vendors limit updates to bug fixes for the most part. Not new features, steps in features and functionality require a trade up.
My Flex on the other hand has continued to evolve over the relatively short time I have owned it. And I foresee continued positive change as the radio which is the software continues to evolve.
The recent cost and experience associated with the step to version 2 was and continues to be a pleasant experience.
Congrats to the team at FRS and the community of those who participate in the release cycle.

Wonderful description of the Flex philosophy. I believe Flex and the SDR concept has spawned a paradigm in amateur radio.

Could not agree more. I am hopeful that 2.x is the start of a string of "improvements" and "enhancements". I for one am willing to pay for that.
As a professional software engineer for more than 25 years I am well aware of how hard it is to "do" a software project let alone add major features.1 -
