Fldigi won't transmit on 6500. Receive OK

I have gotten everything but transmit working on Fldigi. PTT works, but no CW or other sig is transmitted.  I followed a similar conversation from 7 months ago and didn't find my problem.  When you download the slice xml file, it downloads in my browser as a txt file.  I pasted this into Notepad and renamed it as an xml file.  Is this legit? It is saved on the desktop and loaded by RigCat. Does it have to be in another location? When I downloaded the latest version of Fldigi, I deleted a prior version.  Is this ok, or does it have to be uninstalled?  Thanks.

Chip, I just had this problem a few days ago and you may find that thread here but to save you time, here is the answer I was given. It did work for me. I did NOT need to rename the file extension. It stayed an .xml file.
Here is the rig description file link. It worked for me. Just download the one you need and paste it somewhere such as your desktop or other place you can easily find it. The in Fldigi, go to FLDIGI config/Rig/Rig CAT  and browse for the new file.

The problem I had: FLDIGI config/Rig/Rig CAT - rig description file says "Rig not Assigned.xml". In my old configuration on old computer, it said "SmartSDR-SliceA.xml".

You can find the xml here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/xmls/flex/

BTW: Be sure you are running the latest version of fldigi.

So there it is.    73, Jim

    Try this...

Don't download the file and save it.  It seems to corrupt it.
Instead...Right-click it and select "Save target as..."
This should give you a good copy of the .xml file.

Ken, you are 100% correct and I should have mentioned that. My bad.     Jim

    Oops..
that should read "Save LINK as..."

You must also copy the .xml files for SmartSDR_SliceA.xml   and the other slices you plan to use into your FLDigi folder in the Program Files folder that contains it.
If you have installed and updated several versions of FLDigi, they will each be in different folders.

There is a way, I think, to tell the program to find the .xml files in a different folder, but I usually just move them to the new version's folder.

Jim, That "download" vs. "Copy LINK as" issue drove me bats a few years ago.
Not having any experience with .xml files, I didn't realize that the "notebook" program that was the default way my computer downloaded things was messing things up.....  a real head-scratcher....

The other thing that I stumbled on was the need to "Initialize" the Rig Cat after setting everything up on that config screen...

I don't think CW via PTT is supported by Flex radios. Fldigi can only be used to send soundcard CW. WinWarbler will make use of Flex's winkey interface.

Thanks for clearing that up, Ken. Guess I lucked out by dumb luck... HI HI.   It worked well for me once I was informed the link for the .xml file.  73, Jim

Gentlemen...you nailed it.  It's all working now.  The bruises on my forehead from banging my head on the keyboard can now begin to heal.  I am using Windows 10 on a Mac so keeping the ports form messing each other up can be a challenge.  I also don't spend a lot of time at the system level on the PC so keeping track of where files are hiding also messes me up sometime.  Thank you.

Use CWX in smartsdr with keyboard and RX in Fldigi. I believe.
